GuestHere I sit at McDonald’s, sipping DandyBlend, a roasted grain beverage made of barley, rye, chicory, and dandelion root. McDonald’s provided the cup of hot water and the sweetener, the DandyBlend I keep handy for days when I still crave coffee. There are several variants of this so-called “Mormon coffee”. Postum has made a comeback, and there are also brands such as Pero and Cafree. All of these are made as one would make instant coffee. There are even a couple of brands such as Ayurvedic Roast, designed to be brewed in a coffeemaker.
Some feel these latter have the most authentic coffee-like flavor, followed by the DandyBlend. (The original “Mormon tea” was roasted dandelion root, with a flavor somewhere between coffee and tea).
All of these are100% caffeine-free, zero acidity for those with acid reflux, and contain zero coffee products.
Ergo, Word of Wisdom friendly.
The DandyBlend may be helpful to the liver, a common medicinal use of dandelion: however, in DandyBlend, the dandelion root is the last of four ingredients, suggesting that it is present more as a flavoring than as a therapeutic additive. It is the most convenient for travel, sold in tubelike pouches.
Does anyone else have a favorite “Mormon coffee” substitute?

GuestI won’t be much help, because all I really crave is a coffee ice creamsubstitute. And for that Pero works alright. May 2, 2016 at 4:15 pm #311307Anonymous

I just eat it before it melts. That way it’s not a drink at all.

You do know that dandelion root is given out freely at the bottom of tubelike stems, right?
Reminds me; I’m overdue to harvest the back yard again.

GuestI liked Postum and Inka. I couldn’t really tell the difference between those substitutes and coffee, but I think I only drank coffee once or twice before I joined the church as a young adult, so I didn’t have much to compare to. May 3, 2016 at 12:40 am #311310Anonymous
GuestI drink Pero. My family drank Postum when I was young. I also have some herbal teas that I like. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk

GuestI count it as a tender mercy that I never developed a taste for coffee before joining the church. We did have an older sister in our ward at one time (she passed on a couple years ago) who had joined the church later in life and coffee was her thing. She was faithful, though, and switched to Postum. Postum wasn’t always readily available here, but what really caused her a problem was when they stopped making Postum for awhile. She was literally in tears. It was during my time of inactivity and agnosticism and I really felt compassion for her. FWIW, I don’t see anything wrong with using coffee in a recipe or coffee flavored ice cream – D&C 89 refers to hot drinks.

GuestHave you tried Crio BrĂ¼? It’s made with a French press and is like hot chocolate but no sweetener. Bitter like coffee. I love it, but I never had a taste for coffee. I do drink a ton of herbal teas and still miss black/green/oolong teas terribly. May 21, 2016 at 12:25 pm #311313Anonymous

Hmm. My grandmother was a functioning alcoholic. She would have beer at breakfast (and the rest of the day), but she also had coffee. I don’t think she considered one a substitute for another. Might I suggest that if you consider beer a substitute for coffee you might want to investigate an addiction program? [Mod. note: the last sentence is only partly tongue-in-cheek. If there is a problem I am not making fun, but sincerely hope you get the help you need. In the general your response is not funny, irrelevant, and inappropriate. Unless you really do have an issue, none of us really think you consider beer a substitute for coffee.]

Did you meant to say “in the general, your response is not funny, is irrelevent, and is inappropriate” or does the “not” refer to funny, not irrelevent and not inappropriate?
Just not sure whether the word “not” applies to all the adjectives or just the word ‘funny’.

Guest[Admin Note]: This site does not encourage beer as a substitute for anything, even though individual participants are free to drink whatever they want. May 21, 2016 at 9:07 pm #311318Anonymous

Thank you for pointing out my grammatical error, SD, and my apologies. The sentence as you worded it (adding “is” before irrelevant and inappropriate) is the intended meaning. Not was meant to apply only to funny. The real message, as Ray also points out, is that the comment about beer being a substitute for coffee is just out of line and if it were intended to be funny, it is not funny.

Guest[Admin Note]: We have a history with a couple of participants / former participants with comments advocating the consumption of beer. Thus, some of us are a bit more sensitive to those comments than others. This thread has run its course, so I am locking it. Individuals can consume whatever they want, but this site is not the place to advocate the consumption of substances that are forbidden currently in the modern interpretation of the WofW.
