GuestGeneral Conference is nearly upon us and we can expect two new apostles to fill the current openings. Like last time, my hopes are for a person of color or at least not more Utah born and raised white guys. My short list: Garrett W. Gong
Gerald Causse (although relatively new as Presiding Bishop)
Ulisses Soares
Thoughts? Just for fun, of course.

GuestI vote for Gerald Causse. He gave one of the best talks I’ve ever heard at a stake conference. I think he’s somewhat Uchtdorf-like. I don’t really know much about either of the other two. I bet they are also considering Kim Clark – in the past they seemed to like BYU and BYUI presidents, plus he seems fairly orthodox which may appeal to the First Presidency.

GuestIf speculation got me anywhere – I’d take Patrick Kearon. Yes he’s white, but British. His talk on Refugee’s is still a hallmark address over our GC pulpit. Good news I am taking a GC sabbatical. The less I listen. The less it will hurt.

GuestI’m personally hoping for Robert C. Gay. Not only would it be cool to have a gay apostle, but I did hear him once give a great talk on actively finding ways to serve humankind and he made heavy use of Mother Teresa in the talk. Normally, I would say that Kim B Clark is too old at 69, but RMN obviously isn’t concerned about age, given his picks for the FP.
I hope we get someone that doesn’t look like RMN’s little brother, physically or spiritually, but I have my doubts.
I will not be surprised at all if Whitney Clayton is chosen. He’s been a member of the Pres70 for 10 years, and that group of seven men is the most likely source from which to call a new Apostle. MRB, DFU QLC, DTC, NLA and RAR were all serving in that presidency at the time of their call to the Q12.

GuestI was hoping no one would mention Clayton. He’s on my list of those who I would prefer not. I actually wouldn’t be surprised given his bent, his position as senior president of the Seventy, and the conservative aspect of RMN. The only saving hope is that he wasn;t called last time and has just gotten older. Frankly it might push me over the edge were he to be called. And Clark is a possibility, but I’m not crazy about him either. Interestingly the Seventy become emeritus (that is forced to retire) at age 70 which sort of makes calling one in his late 60s a waste. But there’s no such thing for apostles. Clayton is less than 2 years from emeritus.

GuestA lively discussion from a couple of years ago… last time we had vacancies. A lot of it is still relevant. March 31, 2018 at 4:14 pm #327393Anonymous

There is a horse track nearby – maybe I should try my luck!
