    Elder Dale G. Renlund(Q12):

Helping saints living in poverty: The greater the distance between the giver and the receiver, the greater the feeling of dependency and entitltlement. That same concept applies to spiritual matters. The more we are distant from God and Jesus, the more entitled we tend to feel. We begin to feel we deserve grace.

My notes will be sporadic. I am listening intently to this one.

Our absolute distance from God is less important than our direction of travel; God is more pleased by repentant sinners than by self-righteous believers.

The sacrament is important in drawing closer to God. Beautiful example of inclusion and the importance of the ordinance in a meeting in Africa. “He did this just for me.” We take the sacrament communally, but it is a personal ordinance for every member.

“If life were truly fair, you and I would never be able to stand clean before God. In that respect, I am glad life is not fair.”

No matter where you stand, draw nearer to God. Partake of the sacrament with individual intent.

This is one I will re-visit. I didn’t want unrealistic expectations for Elder Renlund, but, right now, he has joined Pres. Uchtdorf as one of my favorite apostles.

I wonder the same thing I wonder every Conference: if we aren’t supposed to write letters to General Authorities, why do GA’s frequently quote from letters they’ve received from members during GC?

“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” is one of my favorite songs. Great way to end an excellent session.

I won’t be able to take notes during the next session. If someone else can, great; if not, I will try to add summaries later, if I can make the time to do that.

Of course my internet feed goes all glitchy during “Come Thou Font” :(

Elder Renlund’s talk is resonating with my kids, and that makes me happy. I love all talks that contemplate the sacrament, and the Road to Emmaus story is also a favorite jumping-off point of mine.

    Sorry, I can’t.

There were audible “nos” voiced during the any opposed portion of the FP, Q12, and area 70s. It didn’t sound like a large group, it’s probably something that will happen every time now.

General Primary Presidency released. New GPP:

    Joy D. Jones

    Jean B. Bingham

    Bonnie H. Gordon?

Monson reminded Uchtdorf after the financial and statistical reports that people that opposed should meet with their SP. Almost thought they were going to ignore the votes completely this time. ;)

    Rasband:

If you can get through a lot of “leaders are awesome” talking points peppered throughout (especially in the beginning of the talk) I think you’ll find some good portions. There’s a focus on Jesus but there’s also the message that Jesus is accessed via leaders.

    Andersen:

Opened by quoting from the family proclamation.

He talked of less than picture perfect families, a child that has a parent that has diminished faith was one example. Huge paraphrase, children should remain faithful despite parents especially in the context of converts. Of course children should honor their parents wishes, wait patiently on baptism if parents won’t allow it.

I was groaning a bit at the beginning of Elder Andrsen’s talk, but he took it in a direction I didn’t expect – and which I liked.

A mixed bag, overall, but some really good moments, especially after the first part.

    Arnold:

    The rescue:

    1) Don’t delay – as told in a story about a boat in a storm, the rescue boats didn’t arrive in time because they were too busy planning. Don’t spend too much time in PEC.

    2) Don’t give up – as told in a story about his inactive niece? and her non-member husband that eventually got baptized after 25 years.

    3) Joy will be great if you bring one soul unto Christ – as told in a story about one rescued lost sheep having lots of children, serving as BP, doing the work, rescuing others.

    4) All called.

Bro thanked people for their efforts.

Bro was sincere. Bro loves his mother.

You kind of wonder why they don’t say something about the opposing votes in the pre-GC FP letter that gets read in sacrament meeting. Something like “opposing votes won’t be counted so don’t bother,” worded more diplomatically of course. On the other hand, the more times it happens, the less people seem to care.

Will there be any talks delivered not in English this time around? Seems like they made a really big deal of it a few conferences ago but then the idea fell by the wayside.

    Mazzagardi:

    His conversion story.

His story about doubts and questioning (why did the restoration happen in upstate NY?). Toured the sites, wondered where the crowds mentioned by JS were at (back in the 1820s maybe? ;) ).

After this is becomes a first vision/JSH talk.

If you have questions, don’t give up. Do what JS did, ask god.

    Bednar:

Retaining a remission of our sins.

Paint by numbers retelling of some of the LDS flavor of the atonement. Here I heard Bednar say grace, mercy, and a 3rd thing. What’s interesting is what he did not mention, works, justice, etc. I was surprised.

The talk focused on ordinances (necessary to access godliness):

    1) Baptism

    2) GotHG

    3) Sacrament

People are imperfect, the plan isn’t (no mention of people’s interpretation of the plan ;) ). This section of his talk would have been gas on the fire during my scrupulous years… but those were years I couldn’t be soothed anyway.

Lots of ordinance dogma in this one. Can’t wait to sleep through the retelling of it during PH one day in the future.
