LOL Ballard, Facebook hasn’t been using “pokes” for years. Gotta give him credit for trying to stay relevant with “the kids” :D

    Ballard:

Family council, not to be confused with FHE.

    4 types of councils:

    1) General – entire family

    2) Executive – mother and father

    3) limited – Parents and one child

    4) One on one – one parent, one child

I have no issue with teaching people to hold a family council, I like the idea, but I’d rather he focus more time on the whys and less on the hows.

It’s the “chuckle at the old guy” moment of the conference.

I was kinda bored with this session overall. I really, really, really wanted to see a bunny rabbit hiding in the grass behind the pulpit. It would have made my day.

“Hey baby, it’s Sunday afternoon. Wanna have an executive family council?” 😆

I get what he is saying about the importance of fault communication (especially one-on-one time with parents) but I think it works better for us if we keep it informal. If we tell our kids it’s time for a boring important family meeting (especially on Sunday when they are meetinged out) we will lose them before the opening prayer.

Our past bishop would have formal councils and interviews with his wife and children. It just came across as corporate, formal, and weird. But then .. His family is part of a old LDS family trust that treats famil, church promotions and positions like a corporate ladder. It is a format that I don’t plan to adopt.

Pres. Uchtdorf on young men who are waiting for the perfect woman:

    Quote:

If the perfect woman really existed, do you really think she would be interested in you?

He also mentioned the brother-in-law who thinks his political view is the Gospel view.

    Serious man-crush.

Loved Pres. Uchtdorf’s talk on saving marriages and families. He does such a good job of inspiring without it feeling like a lecture.

I missed most of DFU’s talk because DD and I had cookies to frost, but I loved his pink tie.

On the radio this evening during a news blurb station said that Mormon leaders encouraged members to more tolerance for others. This is not in Utah or Idaho and wasnt a station affiliated with the church. I assumed the news referred to Redlunds talk but not sure. I haven’t seen a reference to tolerance on this thread so I wonder if it was a minor point that the news selected.

I interpreted the statement as what nonLDS might want us to take out of conference.

    Quote:

They implored members to be more thoughtful and sensitive toward children from all backgrounds, many of whom don’t come from “picture-perfect” families.

    Quote:

The comments on politics came from Kevin R. Duncan, a member of the Quorum of the Seventy. He said people should be wary of resenting others because they belong to another religion, hold opposing political views or even root for a different sports team.

“Let us all remember that God looketh not upon the color of the jersey or the political party,” Duncan said. “In the competitions of life, if we win, let us win with grace. If we lose, let us lose with grace.”

    Quote:

Neil L. Anderson of the Quorum of the Twelve urged members to embrace all the children of the faith — no matter their family situation. He said the religion has hundreds of thousands of children who live with only one parent or whose parents aren’t Mormon.

    Quote:

“While a child’s earthly situation may not be ideal, a child’s spiritual DNA is perfect because one’s true identity is as a son or daughter of God,” Anderson said.

Anderson didn’t mention children of gay parents. The church came under fire last November when it announced new rules banning baptisms for children living with a gay or lesbian parent.

Those children are still welcome to attend church services. Church leaders have said the rules were intended to prevent children from being caught in a tug-of-war between teachings at home and church.

I don’t have much time but on the PH session:

    1) The guy giving the opening prayer busted out crib notes, he pulled out an index card. I’m not sure whether he read elements of the prayer from that or not but it looked like he did. I don’t have a problem with it, heck I’d want to do the same in an environment like that.

    2) The session was shorter than normal, like 30 minutes shorter. Now I don’t know whether that’s the result of Monson not being able to give a 20 minute talk or whether they intentionally shortened the meeting but I’m sure everyone knew that Monson’s talk was going to be brief, they had the opportunity to schedule another speaker.

If they intentionally shortened the meeting, bravo. I like the 90 minute format better. It’s easier to stay focused, especially after having already attended 240 minutes of conference.

Pres. Monson (looks and sounds much better than last conference):

4 new temple – Ecudor, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Peru

Choices: Lives turn on small choices. “Alice in Wonderland” – If you don’t know where you want to go, it doesn’t matter which path you take.

Build faith, and make choices based on that faith.

    Choose Christ.
