“Husbands and wives, you should be equal partners in your marriage. Read often and understand the proclamation on the family and follow it. Avoid unrighteous dominion in any form. No one owns a spouse or children; God is the Father of us all and has extended to us the privilege of our own family, which was previously only His, to help us become more like Him. As His children we should learn at home to love God and to know that we can ask Him for the help we need. Everyone, married or single, can be happy and supportive within whatever family you may have.”

Yes, but then the family proclamation says husbands preside over the home. I know this is semantics… But it’s pretty important. Just like over or with.

HSAB, Agreed… I just am glad to see the dialog starting to work closer to the concepts that women and men should be equal in their relationships, and that people can find love in non-traditional families. What I like about it, specifically, is that the church, I believe without malice or intent, has simply been tone-deaf about these kinds of topics; inadvertently disparaging women in general, and women that work, singles, divorced people, and children of broken homes in particular. The MO of the church in the past has been to continue the ideal, not realizing that they were being exclusive, and I think now, finally, we are starting to see that the church is trying, at least, to be more inclusive. The church still has a very long way to go, but the previously still waters are beginning to stir. The Proclamation on the Family is from 1995. The language is consistent with that era. I believe that if the proclamation were written 20 years later, it would not include the “preside over” phrase. Even with it, it also does include the phrase “equal partners”, which was somewhat of a step forward.
