I grew up in a predominantly Catholic area in California. Catholicism and it’s rituals surrounded me. Fish on Fridays, catechism, and Ash Wednesday. School was always early release so that families could attend the local parishes service. The ritual got lost for me as I grew up, we have nothing like them in our religion, yet over the years life has crept them back to me. My children’s friends observe Easter and Lenten rituals, this has dripped over to us. Last year our Easter Dinner was also a Passover dinner since they fell on similar dates.

BCC is running a series on these traditions. I thought I’d share them with everyone here. Blessed Ash Wednesday.

I work at a Catholic university now.

It’s really cool to see so many people here throughout the day who went to mass on Ash Wednesday. The ash cross on their foreheads is neat to see.

It kind of reminds me of the ring around my forehead when I leave the temple. 🙂

I’ve always thought this was a beautiful thing.
