    Passionate belief? (or even fanaticism?)

Having a famliy member or loved one leave the Church and join the 7th-Day Adventists? (who then was happy or perhaps miserable?)

Insecurity? (self-directed or out of concern for those seen to be weaker?)

Protection complex? (based on previous experiences or not?)

A bad experience with a 7th-Day Adventisit? (generally or specifically?)

I don’t know. It’s easy to make snap judgments, and often they will be fairly accurate, but in the end – we just don’t know. We just need to try to act differently ourselves and grant him the grace and charity to not pick the harshest, least flattering reason that comes to mind.

In the church I’ve been attending, they have several different ministers that rotate each week. I believe it’s to keep the doctrine on track. I don’t mind it. Many LDS I’ve heard turn into confession, guilt and crying sessions.

DW and I have friends from many churches and have visited their services before. I have even been to a different Baptist church in the same town. I did not like the sermon. It may be that it wasn’t well prepared or that the preacher didn’t express himself well, or maybe that the subject matter just didn’t resonate with me.

So I agree that sometimes there are Pastors that are just better at it than others. I have heard some great talks given from the LDS pulpit and the idea that this talk may be a window into the heart and mind of a fellow traveler is nice. We get to “pastor” each other.

I love the sense of community in the LDS church. I am sure that some other individual churches have a great sense of community, but I am not aware of any that have so thouroughly assimilated this sense of community into every program as the LDS have done.

I remember telling a stake president once, who worked with my husband at Palmer University, about the “Love Circles’ groups they had at the 7th day adventist church. Sisters met once a week and shared their problems and prayed for each other. I told him we can learn things from other churches. He got so angry at me and said, “I don’t ever want to hear another word about the 7th day adventist church. We are the only ones with the truth.”

I remember another post where someone (Orson or Heber) said they had been successful quoting the Dali Lama etc. in Sunday school by obscuring the source. “Someone once said…”

I think perhaps the SP felt that your comment, “we can learn things from other churches.” was an affront. No doubt he firmly believes in a top down organization directed through revelation. Perhaps he is offended that a church that holds the “fullness of truth” could somehow learn new truth from another church.

As an aside, PH was taught by the visiting high counselor and he related a story. Pres. GBH was visiting with area SP’s and after hearing the low numbers asked sadly, “How can I go to the Savior with numbers such as these?”. The high counselor expressed that he, for one, takes this literally to mean that GBH had PPI’s with Jesus. I share this as an example of how the SP Bridget has referenced might think that if there is anything new to be revealed, it should come from the top through the appointed method.

and I immediately thought of prayer.

Just goes to show how we see (or hear) what we believe, instead of believing what we see (or hear).

Yes, it would seem that we all put our own spin on information as it passes through the filter of our understanding.
