    Hmmm…could be.

We are a peculiar people….but don’t want to be THAT peculiar…just a little peculiar, in a normal kind of way. :problem:

Someone on W&T pointed out that the polygamous church presidents were the ones with beards. First one with no beard was David O. McKay, whose parents were the first to have practices no polygamy. First of all, that’s horrifyingly recent. Secondly, might this be the real unstated reason the church hates facial hair? It equates it with polygamy, and therefore reminds us of our embarrassing and damaging past?

That was one of the explanations that I heard as to why the church was “anti-beard”. Trying to change the image from freaky looking bearded guys. Now that beards are coming back in, most are wondering why the ban in the first place.

It would be interesting to see when beard-hatred entered LDS culture. Could it have been around the time David O. McKay took over? He was the first without a beard, and likely had enough influence (yeah) to encourage the membership to adopt the same attitude toward facial hair.

Is it improper to pray that they quickly realize how stupid this all is and it makes the institution look silly?

If praying would help – I’d do it. Seems to me though we are long past prayer requests. Our Universities have taken sterilization of life to a new level. I expect Burka’s any day.

What the heck is going on in Provo? Does anyone have kids there? (Is it as crazy when you’re there on the ground as it looks from the outside?)

No, Provo isn’t that crazy all around. Parts of southern and northern Utah are much weirder than Provo. Yes, it is quite conservative and relatively crazy in some ways, but it’s not BYU culture crazy.

My daughter lives in Provo. She is happy, but will probably like to move away after they graduate BYU.

There are lots of wierd cultural stuff that bug them, but they don’t go crazy with it. More of just annoying things when she feels she is relaxed and balanced in her beliefs and feel others are so zealous that it creates differences, but she deals with it. I felt the same way when I was there, there are just ideas some people are trying to institute to challenge students to be as faithful as they can be…but sometimes gospel principles are lost in the labyrinth of good ideas.

My daughter gravitates towards others who think the same way, are annoyed at not being able to find Dr Pepper on campus, and beards and other dumb stuff…but they find there are many good things about it, and are active in their ward and not all of this weird stuff bugs them on a daily basis. But they mock and laugh with their friends at some things that are really funny, when you stop and think about it. So it also helps them keep a sense of humor about it.

OK Heber, you just moved past hope, faith, belief and into KNOWLEDGE. I know I need my Dr. Pepper and would have a hard time @ the Y with or without facial hair.

This reminds me of my high school days. They had a “no facial hair” rule and one crazy guy got called out on it. So he not only shaved his face, he also shaved his eyebrows because he said, “it is facial hair” and tried to make a stink out of the administration not enforcing the “no facial hair” rule by stating he was the ONLY student – male or female – that had no facial hair. :-)
