    Two thoughts.

    1) The BYU subsidy has bothered me for a long time.

My husband’s brother married into an extremely wealthy LDS family. They are also big BYU supporters. It’s well-known that when one of his kids wasn’t accepted into a graduate program at BYU, the patriarch of the family called up a friend and offered a large donation to BYU in exchange for a spot in this graduate program (meaning that someone else who may have been more qualified wasn’t accepted). Now, these kinds of deals are probably the norm in higher education… BUT… BYU is supposed to be “the Lord’s university.” It really sticks in my craw that people who can barely afford to feed their families are being instructed to pay tithing FIRST, in order to subsidize the college education of millionaires.

    2) Bednar’s apostolic warning starts out awesome and then sort of peters out towards the end. “The spirit of Ricks may be extinguished”? What does that actually mean? Is your average BYU-I student really concerned with preserving the spirit of Ricks, a regional community college which had its name and identity changed when current college students were small children?
