You’re right Ray, they are more permissive than in the past – but I would suggest they want those differences of opinion to “below the line.” They don’t crack down on “By common consent” or “Mormon stories” like they usually do.

Maybe this is more of the slow burn. Maybe the permissiveness of allowing sites like MS or BCC means that the attitudes will grow and influence the views of the majority.

It’s also difficult when you have a conference like the lastest one that still seemed to draw a line in the sand. Or attempt to (especially Elder Holland). Maybe most people just ignored it or didn’t even know it had been drawn.

More impotent then just the conference. It’s been ratcheting up from AA and GA this year. Of which I have heard from the GA this year, what he himself said he asked what the twelve would like him to say, he said the point which was almost the entirety if the 40ish minute talk was “if you are in or are you out” repeated no less then 37 times in the talk. Along with “which way are you facing”. More importantly he said after around the 6th time of repeating “if you are in or are you out” that the real question was “if you are all(completely) in it out”. A couple sentences then “is you are completely all in or out again until it was says about 37 times(yes I started counting after several times).

What this tells me along with the last conference, the SP and HC, the AA and the GA along with the key words in Hollands talk “for now”. Is that it was never more then a temporary measure. “For now” does indicate and means “tolerance for a small time”, not permissiveness. The latest GC combined with the GA message of the 12 clearly show that.

Because “for now” is very indicative of the future talks that have been taken place since then. I expected nothing less then a clean sweep after a time of ratcheting it up and that’s exactly what seems to be happening with ever increasing talks, including one by the GA after the GC who referenced that the 12 indicated this to him to talk about.

I’m not really sure that there will be a wholesale change in either direction. Honestly, I can’t see Pres. Uchtdorf changing his rhetoric and I don’t see Pres. Monson becoming any more hardline. Any change seems to be more of a slow turn, and I still believe the ship is turning. From a logical point of view, if the top leadership sees a big decline in membership and/or activity and if convert baptisms and retention are slowing (all of which seems to be happening) they have no choice but to soften the rhetoric to reverse the tide. I think some of the hardliners may hope it’s temporary, but I don’t think the younger generations, upon whom the church and TV ratings rely ;) , will tolerate it being temporary.

FC, I can see individual GA’s taking that tack, based on their own personality and orientation, but I absolutely don’t see it from the Q12 and FP.

Also, repeating ANYTHING 37 times in a 40 minute talk is obsessive-compulsive. That is a personal issue, and it sounds like that individual heard what he was inclined to hear and is a zealot by nature.

FC, if it’s any reassurance I had stake conference a few weeks ago. I’d considered skipping it, but went anyway.

I was amazed (had meant to write about it sooner).

Stake President main message: “I don’t want anyone going away from this meeting feeling guilty. There are times and seasons, peaks and troughs. I’m sure you’re all working as hard as you can on whatever you’re doing. Remember to open the windows of your soul to let in the light of Christ.”

Area Authority main message: “Alma the Elder was screwing up his life but got a second chance. History repeated itself with his son. And his grandson. The best message of the Book of Mormon is that the atonement is all about change. If you screw up, don’t worry, you can always have a second chance.”

He said “screw up” three times in the talk. That’s a little bit rude in UK (not sure about USA). It made me laugh.

No-one said “hasten the work” in their talk once. Not even the mission president. No-one gave any ultimatum or drew any lines. After my awful brand conference earlier this year, stake conference was completely the opposite.

If only all stake conferences were like yours. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, mckay11, for sharing that experience. The water is starting to get to the end of more rows.

Hi Mackey. Thank you for sharing. Even it is the complete opposite of any stake I have ever been in. Hansten the work only becomes stronger and stronger and faster and faster over time with talks and meetings and service assignments.

Generally speaking the quote is “we must produce the chosen result and speed that god has selected”. “God has selected it”. “He doesn’t ask us to run faster then we are able so of you aren’t gaining the result and speed of hastening the work it’s because your not doing something right to not trying at all”.

Yes those speeches on a almost weekly basis. Most strong from the Stake HC and GAs.

But again I am so happy for your ward. That sounds awesome. I’m there in spirit with you.

Screw-up has meanings here. As in, I’m sorry boss I made the wrong diagnosis, I screwed up.

Sorry friend, I gave you the wrong score for the team by accident, I lied to you and screwed up, the real score is ..”.

Now something severe is like, I accidentally put the car in reverse and backed up into your car, man I f#%% up. I’m

Sorry. People generally use that when really big mistake(accident) occurs. Depending on context and how you say it, it can come out really harsh or really funny lol.
