I thought about where to share this comment about our current bishop, and I figured this was the only real place I could share it without everyone dogpiling and turning it into a bitch fest. So, today when church ended, the bishop is out looking for my deacon-age son. Can’t find him. Says to my priest son (I was standing there) to ask his younger brother if Jesus would pass the sacrament with his sleeves rolled up. I told the bishop I’m pretty sure this was my fault because I told my son his sleeves are getting so short they look ridiculous. Believe it or not, I can’t seem to find boys’ white church shirts anywhere in Singapore. We ordered a shirt from the US but the shipment won’t arrive until next week. Then, he goes on a quest to find his wife and get her to hand down some of her son’s shirts to us or whatever, sort of a nice gesture but pushy.

Anyway, then he turns on this other kid, brand new priest, who is standing talking to my son (the priest) and asks him whether he thinks Jesus would be talking at the sacrament table. He tells him to think about that. After the bishop leaves, my son turns to me and is kind of pissed about it. He says, “Jesus would talk at the sacrament table if he didn’t know what he was doing.” I turned to the kid who was confronted about this and said, “As I recall Jesus did in fact talk at the sacrament table, meaning the Last Supper. He said, ‘That which thou doest, do thou quickly.'”

So, it was no big deal really. This guy’s a new bishop, and he’s a college professor so he’s got a pretty high opinion of his opinions. My son knows to laugh this stuff off, and I doubt the other kid was really that offended. With bishops released every five years, I always feel like we’re breaking in a new one.

    *sigh*

You handled it perfectly, especially with the response about talking at the sacrament table – although I probably would have mentioned that I would be happy to have my son wear what Jesus wore when he passed the sacrament but that I don’t think it would be allowed anymore with all our modern hedging about the law. :P (I know, I wouldn’t have said it, but I absolutely thought it. :D )

Yeah, I was thinking – how do you roll up homespun tunic sleeves? It was just a weird thing to say, IMO.

My husband has pointed this out, and the stake here is trying really hard (not too successfully yet) to go from “expecting” and “assigning” to “inviting.” Since it’s Asia, it’s very hard for people to not just tell others what to do or what is expected. But the correct thing is to invite people to do things and not be so presumptuous. This bishop has a hard time with that, although the SP is much worse. This bishop just likes to use guilt trips, which in our case just fall flat.

Someone needs to ask the bishop if Jesus would go around asking people if Heavenly Father would do this or that in a passive aggressive guilt tripping manner.

I’m sure he is trying to minister and teach, but it’s a lame way to do it. Ask Danielle Lesser to say something to him….she is a straight shooter! ;)

Great response Heber13. Yeah, I don’t care if he addresses stuff, but can he do it without being so passive aggressive? Ugh! Just FYI – Danielle’s not in our ward any more, and they meet in another building, so I don’t really see her any more.

I don’t think I would have been able to pass up this one without a humorous wisecrack and a loving smile: Yes, I think Jesus would pass the sacrament with his sleeves rolled up. A good portion of the New Testament Gospels are stories about Jesus flaunting the rules to make important points about them to us. He worked on the Sabbath. He hung out with sinners. He disobeyed his church leaders and he even started a brawl in the temple. He had long hair and wore flip flops while blessing the sacrament (Last Supper), and he probably rolled up his sleeves so they didn’t droop into the bowl of wine he was blessing.

You handled it good though Hawk. You have the right focus. Be classy and help others become good leaders.

    Heber–Like!!!

On a personal note, I was ordained a high priest about 3 weeks ago in conjunction with Stake Conference. It’s kind of weird going from the oldest Elder to the youngest High Priest. I have to say that HP has MUCH better prepared lessons than Elders quorum. I like it so far!

Their not all worn out on Sunday at lesson time because they don’t have to work for their blessings anymore 😆 (moving household goods, yardwork for widows and orphans, setup and take down hundreds of folding chairs, etc. etc.).

All they have to do is try to stay awake in meetings and pontificate on the deeper mysteries in class… ;)

Welcome to the land of the old farts, friend! (as opposed to the old friends’ farts)

The plot thickens. Same deacon son is in a school play that requires him to wear his church pants as his costume. He got home from an all-day Saturday play practice having left the pants behind in the locked school 45 mins away. So today, he had to wear his JEANS to church. I actually think the bishop thinks we were being smart asses because of the rolled up sleeves comment last week! He didn’t say a word, but he was definitely scowling. We had just told Jeff to skip passing today anyway, so he wouldn’t be embarrassed about the jeans.

😈 I think that’s kinda funny, actually. Sometimes things happen for a reason.

I wish I could have been there.

Seriously. I like to study people, and it would have been an interesting view.

I am awed so many times by the insignificant things that can genuinely threaten people. To be fair I do remember my hard-line days when I was at least mildly shaken &/or confused by seeing strange piercings or tattoos at church.
