GuestSo, a missionary was announcing in priesthood the need for help from members of the Ward. Among the needs he mentioned were “if you see us with people who look like investigators — you know, like a man in a blue shirt – don’t be afraid to come up and introduce yourself and talk to us”. I happened to be sitting in the front row wearing a blue shirt. So I simply raised my hand. That was it. No words, nothing just raised my hand.
The whole room exploded in uproarious laughter because I am an old timer in the Ward and certainly not an investigator.
After the laughing subsided, I turned to the room and said “I’m also very chatty to don’t be afraid to approach me”.
Another blast of laughter.
I don’t grandstand that I wear different colored shirt — I just wear whatever I happen to have on hand. Sometimes it’s white, sometimes blue.
But I liked the fact that it broadcast the idea that even active members can wear a blue shirt. The massive laughter from the whole priesthood body, including our Bishop made me feel a little more accepted. Perhaps I made a small dent in the “uniform of the priesthood” moniker given to the white shirt and tie dress code…

GuestThree Cheers! This could not have happened had you not been there! August 13, 2017 at 9:12 pm #318301Anonymous
GuestGood for you! A very active woman came in pants today. Knowing her, I’m fairly certain that she was not making any kind of a radical statement. She just felt like wearing pants, and she looked really, really nice. August 13, 2017 at 9:51 pm #318302Anonymous

GuestSilly missionary! Making assumptions like that. 😆 August 13, 2017 at 11:03 pm #318304Anonymous
GuestHaha… thanks, SD, and FWIW, also cracked a smile thinking of the image of the blue-shirted man sitting in the front row with his hand raised. I feel like we’ll get there eventually, at least on this issue, because it is such a small matter. August 14, 2017 at 2:05 am #318305Anonymous

GuestWe are there in my ward. We have quite a few colored shirts every week, and one adult priest who blesses the sacrament regularly in colored shirts. Mormon-central wards can be challenging, but there are lots of people who would follow suit (
) if the right person / people set the example.

I think we’re there in my ward too, and I think you’re right Ray, who else wears colored shirts makes a difference. Currently our HPGL and WML (of the “top brass”) regularly wear colored shirts but in the past we have had the YMP, a different HPGL, and EQP wear colors. This is contrasted to a neighboring ward where it’s hard to find a colored shirt.

However, all it takes is a GA to come to the Ward to speak to comment on how there has been a “deviance from practice” and that everyone should wear white shirts again for that to change –it’s fragile…
On the other hand, if a GA comes down and says nothing whilst people wear blue shirts it would reinforced the idea that the “Uniform of the priesthood” is merely a cultural phenomenon and not engraved in stone.
Years ago Thomas Monson came to our Stake and rebuked us because our SP was allowing men to go out with their wives for home teaching. He said “There’s have been a deviance from Church governance here! Brethren are going out with their wives. Brethren, don’t leave those prospective elders at home!!”.
I was Stake Exec Sec at the time and it was embarrassing for our Stake President who was allowing it due to the paucity of full companionships in our area given the number of people to home teach.
