I always thought they were much the same thing.
It was bound to happen eventually. BSA’s been under a lot of pressure the past couple of years to make the change. It’s a pity; Gender exclusivity isn’t always misogyny, though it always gets labelled as such. Not wanting to get too political, but certain “progressives” keep pushing and pushing… it was admirable in the beginning, but has long since gone sour. What do you think they’ll call it now?
It’s not merging. BSA has been losing money. GSA is pretty pissed at the change because instead of playing nice in the sandbox as it always has, BSA is basically just trying to take over their target market. Will we lose Thin Mints? I am serious. The BSA would show up to international scouting events were troops from around the world were already coed. Perhaps the international troops showed that many fears over allowing girls in troops were unfounded. I don’t really feel much about this. I didn’t like scouting as a youth, and I only tolerated it as an adult. This change might diversify the experience more to appeal more to girls, which would be a good thing.
My first reaction to the news was to wonder whether the Church pulled out of Boy Scouts partly because they saw this coming.
The alternative the Church is doing in this country is more or less unconstrained activities (in our ward, they tend to be fun or skills-building) punctuated by Duty to God.
I think it was the opposite effect. The church pulling out of Boy Scouts caused big financial distress, and to counteract that loss of financial support, the Boy Scouts needed to attract new members somehow, and hey, half the population is female! Just to state clearly, the chartering organization would still have the decision on how to proceed. Nobody is forcing individual troops to accept girls. Roy wrote:

True. In fact the same is true today (and has been for 15+ years) in the Venturing part of scouts (what the 16/17 year olds participate in). Each group decides if they are male only, female only, and mixed. I even know a member of the church that went to a all-girls venturing post (nothing to do with the church – but several girls from the stake were in it).Well, here’s an analogy in Mormon terms. It’s as if the Priesthood was going broke when it lost a big donor, and it realized that the Relief Society was an untapped wellspring of money and had fundraising capabilities, so they Correlated them under the Priesthood umbrella. I was going to say, “Boy Scouts is a non-profit organization. They’re not concerned about profit!” Then I looked it up… Their CEO, Roy Williams, brings in $1.6mil a year. That makes him the 5th highest paid non-profit CEO in the world.
