GuestI think we’ve all seen Peggy Stack’s article about the Church Newsroom. She was reporting on Bro Otterson’s presentation at the FAIR conference. While I am not a fan of FAIR, have a bit of animosity to the Newsroom, and disagree with some of Otterson’s ideas, I found he helped me to understand a number of things that I have been unhappy about. The video is about one hour long, but is worth watching for anyone who has issues with the Church. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rgNu4FFvd8 Having watched this, I feel reassured about a number of things that impact my relationship with the Church. I really wish the Brethren could be as straightforward as he was. He definitely comes off better as a speaker than the article would suggest.

GuestI agree. Bro. Otterson came across as very balanced. Was remarkably frank and likable. There were several things that he said that were worthy of pulling out but my frazzled brain only managed a few.
“Nobody is saying that pastors and church leaders will be forced to perform gay marriages themselves. The Constitution would prevent that.”
I do hear this from rank & file church members. Bro. Otterson mentioned the possibility of losing accreditation for church schools or losing the church’s tax exempt status. I personally believe that yanking accreditation from religious schools is highly unlikely and losing tax free status even unlikelier still. However, seeing the stuff the church may fear helps me to better understand the stances that they have taken.
On this same vein, Bro. Otterson had also mentioned the BSA gay leadership reversal and said that a gay rights group had applauded it as a “positive first step.” He then interpreted that to mean that they would not be fully happy until every troop were forced to accept gay leadership. I felt that this was a huge stretch of a conclusion. However, once again it was helpful for me to better understand the churches recent response statement.
If Bro. Otterson were made into an Apostle – I would not mind hearing his conference addresses.
He has that accent working for him.

GuestThanks for sharing this TT. I watched it in its entirety and found it informative. I agree that Br. Otterson seems very likable, and I believe he believes what he said. I appreciated the little insights like that Elder Christofferson is the apostle over PR, and why the names of the other members of the committee are not shared. Given that Elder Christofferson does seem to be at the forefront of many issues I’m not really surprised at this responsibility. I also liked Otterson’s explanation of why the essays aren’t signed. He said if they were signed by the authors people would criticize them because they’re not signed by the prophet. Interestingly enough, however, that they’re not signed by the prophet is still a criticism.

I have it on my list to listen to, but the proclamation on the family was signed and touted all over the place short of getting it on the side of a blimp. -
