GuestI think it’s what’s known as a useful myth. Not necessarily bad as it encourages hard work, but bad in the sense it creates arrogance. What about the one about the disabled being valiant in the pre-existence?

I think we can assume that since the priesthood ban was not because Blacks were less valiant in the pre-earth life, things we did or didn’t do before coming here have little or no bearing here. Fact is we know almost nothing about the pre-earth life, most of what we hear is speculation and supposition (and assumptions, I suppose
).

GuestIt wouldn’t surprise me if Joseph Smith and Brigham Young made similar statements about the pioneers who founded our church. The nice thing about a religion that postulates a past we can’t remember is that you can make up motivating stuff at will, and no one can call you on it…

GuestFunny topic! This is the first time I’ve ever posted on here, but this topic looked like too much fun to pass up. I teach a primary class, so I get to here the kids talk about the “gospel-related” stuff that they hear from their parents. My favorites have been the theory that Bigfoot is actually Cain, and the story that floats around in forwarded emails about the 16th or 17th century priest in Europe who predicted that the true church would be restored in a wilderness in the mountains near a great lake. That one’s been disproved as hokum, but it’s always funny to see it reappear every two or three years. Thanks for the entertaining thread!
