Richard Bushman’s recent talk “On Being Ill at Ease in the World”.

Definitely a healthy framework for spirituality (in my book).

The end of this article particularly made me wonder whether a similar position could be taken on being ill at ease with the Church. It seems to me that the same benefits that Bushman describes for the other cultural ideas could be applied to how we feel about the Church.

I loved the “spirit” of this article/lecture, even though I don’t agree completely with his arguments.

I like that he’s attempting to tackle his challenges to the three aspects from an LDS perspective. I think that’s a little too “square one”, rather than square two as that group is called. I guess, for me, it would be interesting to know how he would challenge those things from a Christ-centered place. There’s lots of examples of Christ talking about these issues (maybe not science so specifically).

I know his argument is that the uniqueness of mormonism allows him this rhetorical perspective, but given the practical direction of the church, becoming more mainstream christian, de-emphasizing the uniqueness, presenting an image of “normal” protestantism/christianity, etc. I would question this.

I guess what I’m saying is that he’s taking a stand from what he calls mormonism but that place doesn’t exist anymore.

Having said that, it IS a great way to look at spiritual things, reconcile belief systems of the spiritual and the practical. Specifically, by challenging the practical from the spiritual, rather than the other way around, which is what we all seem to do here. Although, I think that is the purpose of this forum.

I just wanted to bump up this thread again…I really like Bushman and his arguments in the article provided in John’s link in the original post.

I just thought others might want to check it out.
