I was amazed to open my BYU Magazine and find a two page article addressing faith crises head on. It talks of difficult questions. sense of betrayal, self doubt, feelings of rejection, etc. of people who are surprised to learn things on the internet that they never heard in Sunday School.

The article is couched in terms of parents helping their children, it doesn’t recognize that “mature” adults can have a faith crisis. Nevertheless, it councils to help the questioner embrace their questions. “You belong with is in your doubt. We want you here. You are us. We are you. We’re all in this together. We’re all at some level of understanding with imperfect faith.”

It opines “LDS culture tends to communicate disapproval of doubt…sometimes to the point of causing someone with questions to feel that he or she is unfaithful or unworthy… and is met with shock or disgust…. How parents react to questions can determine whether a child experiences a faith crises within the faith or turns to those outside the faith for answers…. [Instead] celebrate questions from their children and also allow room for doubt: Doubt creates space for faith to exist. Faith has no meaning without doubt. We have to make peace with that as a people. To have faith is to experience, at some point, its alternative, its opposite. It makes the life of faith so rich and rewarding. I think we need to be [done] with pathologizing doubt”

If only it were published in the Ensign. Nevertheless it might be useful to help introduce some members and leaders to the problem. The article is a full two pages. Find it here: http://magazine.byu.edu/?act=view&a=3306

There is another thread about this here: http://staylds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5441&hilit=byu+magazine” class=”bbcode_url”>http://staylds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5441&hilit=byu+magazine

Bear, it is sent to alumni quarterly and is generally somewhat smaller in size than the Ensign. I would really like to see this article or one very similar in the Ensign.
