For me, life and final judgement are like that. I can focus on the competition and worry about who is getting into heaven, or I can focus on learning the lessons I am supposed to learn and assume God will put me where he wants me. I expect I’ll be happy with God’s choice. He knows me and knows my needs.

LDS doctrine is that we will go where we are most comfortable. Maybe that is not intended as a punishment.

I believe this, and so…in that way…my calling and election is made sure for me. I no longer need to worry about it. I don’t need to do anything different or have fear. My focus is on today’s actions, because

    Quote:

    Matt 6

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Having an earthly authority figure place his hands on my head to tell me my place in heaven is secured and I’m on the right path is a nice gesture. Based on my faith, however, it does nothing to motivate me to change, nor would I believe it literally enough to relax and stop doing anything. I view the whole thing as a kind of “Rank Advancement” some early members of the church were seeking for approval and acknowledgement they were doing OK with their religious practice. The need for such a stamp of approval I think has gone away in our day, because it isn’t talked about or taught like it was before. That’s fine with me. I’m on my path. My future place in heaven will be what I need it to be. Today will be what I need it to be also.

For me, I see myself as progressing from grace to grace as Jesus did. That does not mean I would stop making mistakes. I just would learn from them as Jesus did. I would “Become really, really good at repenting thoroughly and quickly” (“Approaching the Throne of God with Confidence“, Jörg Klebingat, Oct 2014)
