There’s sort of an interesting article in the Tribune about that today (or at least how it became a thing): http://local.sltrib.com/online/WoW/” class=”bbcode_url”>http://local.sltrib.com/online/WoW/

As another example, Sunday in priesthood the lesson was an HBE talk. As the lesson was being announced and the half of us who use technology were looking it up and there was some idle chitchat going on I said I liked Pres. Eyring and that he gave a great talk on peace in the first session of general conference last night. A guy sitting next to me said “Last night? I thought General Conference was next week?!” I replied the rest of it is, but the first session was last night and just left it at that and left him in his confusion to figure it out. (I’m not sure if he thought I was nuts or he was, but likely the former. 😯 ) The guy was clearly ignorant that the women’s session is now referred to as the first session, and I will say that in general my ward is pretty good at recognizing the change.

Maybe we need a TSM story about how he drank Coke in a country where the water isn’t safe and he still became prophet. My hero Pres. Uchtdorf admitted it after all, and he’s still a boss.

Side note: In my son’s South American mission – where the water is not always (or even generally) safe – they are not permitted to drink Coke. Some do because they it’s difficult to enforce unless they have a comp who enforces it, as is the case currently with my son. Guarana soda is OK though.

On the coke end – we had just the opposite. A couple of years ago Elder Christofferson or Marlin Jensen (somebody big like that) was here for regional conference he explicitly said caffeine wasn’t in the word of wisdom. Oh my word, the next F&T meeting in my ward was full of people expressing gratitude, including the Bishop’s wife, for this clarity and revelation.

So over here in the Kingdom we are coke drinkers. That should screw everyone up.

It would be nice if there were stories once in a while about times when a person prayed about whether to do the church thing or the career thing and followed a prompting to do the career thing, and how it brought them blessings. I can’t think of any stories like that, even though I’m sure it happens often.

This happened in RS in my Singapore ward one day. Three of us said exactly this same thing, that we had prayed and knew that we needed to pursue a career. Two of us were successful business women and one was a lawyer. All 3 high earners. Our bishop’s wife sounded incredibly depressed and said she didn’t know we were allowed to pray for things like that. I just thought, “Oh, honey.”

Awesome!! But so sad that the RS Pres didn’t know she could pray about career options. I didn’t know anything was out of bounds for prayer content! 😥

She wasn’t the RS Pres (just to clarify), but the bishop’s wife. But yeah. It was kind of sad I thought.

Funny but true story (I think). This came from my dad when he was serving as SP. The story either comes from his own stake or a story told him by another leader.

There was a bishop in the stake denying temple recommends if people drank caffeinated soda. At a stake leadership meeting during stake conference with bishops and the SP, Elder Nelson was the visiting apostle. During the luncheon, Elder Nelson asked for a coke. Some eyebrows were raised but he was told there was no coke. Apparently he asked someone to go get him a coke. When it finally came he set it down in front of him but apparently never drank it. The message was clear though, caffeinated sodas are not prohibited.

But to the point of the OP, I agree this type of story is unhealthy and breeds the unquestioning, don’t trust your conscience mentality that is severely problematic for so many reasons already enumerated by others on this post. Thanks for sharing.

    Thread Jack Story here –

Though not coke related it does match the Godlike Homage we pay to GA’s.

I was in the Stake Young Women’s Presidency when Elder Dellenbach visited our Stake. Between the sessions the RS served us a sit down dinner. All of the Presidency’s were required to attend the dinner and to “return and report” on the actions of our auxiliary/quorum. My husband who was not in Stake leadership was also invited because the SP liked him. By total chance my husband and I were seated directly across from Elder D. The RS had decorated the tables with jars of home canned fruits and vegetables. Very Pioneerish. Everyone was being so proper and polite. Midway through the ordeal Elder D. leaned across the table and said to my husband, loud enough so everyone could hear, “What you think about opening those pickles?” A total hush hit the room, we all looked panicked, our SP wanted this picture perfect meeting and the GA was blowing it off. My husband reached over, grabbed the jar, opened it’s cute decorated top, and grabbed a pickle, passed the jar to Elder D. and smiled. The SP was super PO-ed.

My husband and I both took the message to mean, “Chill Out and Enjoy Life.” All Elder Dellenbach wanted was a relaxing dinner and pleasant conversation. Not some “Oh holy one, we stand before you to report on our piddlin’ lives. Our goal someday is to be as great as you.”

Of course this story will never be printed in any church publication.

But you published it here. I love that story.

It’s also a reminder that leaders don’t ask to be revered, often we thrust it upon them.

So, Joni…after hearing advice and support from others…how do you find you work through your frustration with the current prophet?
