Could this be condensed into just saying, “hypocrisy”?

I don’t think so, but they are related. Hypocrisy is acting in contradiction to what you say. “Box Checking” is missing the point.

You took the thought I had and could not find the words for and found the words – thank you 😆

    Ok I have another thought…

    Checkbox task completing:

Is it a means to an end, or an end to a means?

I can use a monthly VT visit as a reminder to create an opportunity to develop a better friendship with the sister I am assigned to. It is the vehicle I am using to a different means. I fail when the goal of signing off the box becomes more important than a) being honest with myself and others that now is not the time for me to be doing this (befriending this sister), b) acknowledging the resources might not be there this month, but the goal is still worth it and revising my expectations accordingly, or c) taking the time to visit, or d) shepherding my resources to make contact via another way – it might be a Facebook conversation over a period of days…

I think this is what the Brethren wanted/still want. Unfortunately for many the checkbox got in the way. Checking the box is much easier than doing all of that.

My father and grandfather will attest that I rarely do things the easy way for a reason I am not passionate about.

Box ticking is going through the motions not adapting to specific needs. It is the ultimate form of correlation.

Exactly what the talks today were aiming at — true ministering and not box checking.

Yes – that’s perfectly true although I think they could have used clearer language on occasion.
