GuestMy participation in a recent thread has given me the opportunity to sort of review my feelings about the church in the area of caring for others. Sometimes, it’s easy for me to look at the church and only see the parts I don’t like. But, thinking on this topic has been a good reminder. I lost faith a long time ago. But one of the reasons why I stay with the LDS church is because of the genuine love and service-oriented approach to community. Although I have never been the recipient of church welfare, I have been the recipient of more good-will than I can even begin to enumerate. A lot of times, when I’ve been at my lowest, the service came from unexpected people. All types of members have helped my loved ones and me; young, old, rich, poor, people I knew well, and people I barely knew. I love that about our church. I had a recent experience that I won’t share, because it’s too personal, but the service my family received, from total strangers in a bishopric and relief society was so wonderful, and performed with such love and caring, with no expectation of any reward, that I cannot simply brush it aside. Is the church perfect? No. Are the people in the church perfect? No. But, wow, I’ve seen a lot of good. I’m grateful that during my life, I’ve been able to be connected to such an organization. I have had many opportunities to serve others in situations I might not have participated, had it not been for the strong message of service preached and practiced by the church, and yet, I have always walked away feeling uplifted for having done it.
Even with all that is wrong with the church, its capacity for good still astounds me. Thank you all for the part that you have played in it.

GuestWow, great post, OON. That also makes me think that the other good part is that I have had chances to serve people because of the church and how it is organized. It helps me feel good when I know how I can serve my fellow brothers and sisters, which is an important part of staying…helping to keep make good things happen, even though it isn’t perfect.
