Great quote. A good reminder… to listen. If we are so sure that we are right because we have authority for revelation…we might not listen to the world and other religions and all they have to teach us.

Heber asked – 40 years is a long time to wait for change. What do we do while waiting while we only have 1 mortal experience to live?

I am with you. Only up side I can see is that I wasn’t born Amish.

I often think about that too…born into different circumstances…I wonder what it would be like….I’m kinda glad I have a job and house and family and the internet and gadgets enough that I can complain about boring church on my laptop. I guess there is something to the hierarchy of needs models, that pursuit of happiness means when we take care of some basic needs, we start looking for more ways of greater happiness, continually pushing for better ways to do things and improve things…thus…the church needs to be better than it is, not stuck in the 1950s view of how family life should be and worshipping a god without the technological and intellectual progress God has bestowed on people in the world.

Perhaps the church has it’s own self-interest to maintain members in a state of obedience and “not rocking the boat”…but those sometimes conflict with my personal interests of my purpose on this earth where I get one shot at learning what I need to learn and experience.

If they change too slowly…I don’t have to wait.

If I lived in the 1960s when they didn’t give blacks the priesthood, I would wish now that I was one of the members that pushed for that change, not try to think up excuse doctrines to justify stagnation of doctrine. The same goes for issues of today.

Sometimes I don’t even think God cares about any of these social issues we wrestle with. He just wants to see how we all handle it as we work it out together. So…that’s my spiel…I am not waiting for 40 years for the church to tell me what to think. And I have no keys or authority to make the change for the church. I work within my realm of influence, and teach my family. That’s how I see it.

Amen. Every generation has their issues. Something new will come along and be the bane of our kids generation.

My take is that I try to look for universal truths and teach those. I know many people who say “God is in the Details”. Maybe he is. But I see it more like “God put us here to be in the Details”. My goal is to model the first 2 commandments as I understand them. All the rest are appendages.

As usual, Mom comes in with the short, sweet, and true.

That is where I am also. I only worry about the 2 commandments. And you know – THAT yoke is easy (most all the time).
