Jesus is quite a different guy than people like to think. He was anti-authoritarian for one thing. He was not observant (one modern Rabbi called him a “bad Jew”). He was subversive. Make no mistake, Jesus would not make a good little conforming Mormon. He’d come in and kick some tail and tell people the things they don’t want to hear and confuse and offend everyone because his view was revolutionary – he came not to bring peace, but a sword. He’d ask questions they didn’t like in Sunday School, and he’d give questions that people would take offense at. He’d get up in sacrament meeting and the meeting would take so long that people would start fainting from hunger. That’s the Jesus that’s really in the scriptures. We too often confuse Jesus with a really sweet Kindergarten teacher. He didn’t bring milk & cookies.
Some of the early sources also hint at him having quite a temper, including in Mark. Can you imagine him going to the temple and scaring the 80 year old woman behind the counter: “I will not pay $1.20 to rent my temple packet! The word of god is free to all!”
