GuestI think I have mentioned this elsewhere, but many people still do not seem to be aware that it is possible to pay tithing directly to SLC, bypassing your local unit. That is perfectly acceptable per church leadership, and if more people did this, it would lighten the load on the local clerks and counselors (though maybe increase the load on whomever counts the money in SLC, but that may be a paid position anyway). Fast Offerings cannot be paid to SLC because that money stays local (usually). When you pay directly to SLC, your Bp and local leaders will not see how much you contributed. They will still ask you to go to tithing settlement, but no balancing of records is needed; you’ll get that statement mailed directly to you from SLC. The Bp will just ask if you’re a full tithe payer and give you a sheet with your fast offering contributions only.
This is helpful when you do not wish for others to guess how much money you make, or know how much you contributed.

Yes – I use this every year and have never had a problem. I had one bishop ask me to explain the tax implications of donating to SLC with stocks, which can be positive.
Many bishops, especially of large wards, dislike tithing settlement as much as the average member. It takes away Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings for a full month or more. My bishop doesn’t even look at our papers with the donation numbers. He uses the time to get to know the members and find out how they are doing. For some people it’s the only time he talks to them 1 on 1.

GuestHow do you go about paying tithing, etc directly to Salt Lake? Is it as simple as writing a check & mailing to SLC along with your membership number?

Hi Mike,
Yes, pretty much. You also have to include a tithing slip and how the money is to be allocated. The wards don’t know how much is donated, except for Fast Offerings and Missionary donations. Check out this link:
http://tech.lds.org/wiki/Donations_to_Church_Headquarters I don’t like the idea of anybody knowing how much (or little) I donate, so I really like this option. You can donate by check, wire, or “in-kind.”
