GuestAnybody else bugged by Churchistrue’s post asking if people are listening to the podcast? I think churchistrue is a good guy and I believe he helps lots of people, maybe even more than we do. I dislike that this post seems to be promoting traffic to his blog/podcast though. The only reason to do that is to increase revenue for him. But if it doesn’t bother anyone else I’m OK. FWIW, I have listened to a couple of the podcasts and they are OK.

GuestAn “anyone listening” post doesn’t do much to get a conversation started. I’m on the fence. Many people here respond well to churchistrue’s material but it does seem like he’s transitioned to only coming around when he wants to promote new material.
I remember a similar conundrum with DBMormon’s posts. He started out conversing, then gradually moved to only posting when he had new material to promote.
In short, I dunno.
Is there a hard and fast rule in the Rules and Policies section or is no self promoting more of an unwritten rule?

GuestI recall that discussion about DBMormon as well, and was thinking of it when I wrote the topic. You bring up a good point, though Nibbler. I went and looked at the posts in the “rules and policies” and indeed this is not specifically addressed. Maybe it should be, but then again the rules as they are seem to be serving us pretty well. The rules do say if a link is posted there should be some description of what the link is about, but in this case there isn’t an actual link (except in the signature line) and it’s obvious what it’s about. Another good point is that churcistrue does not regularly participate here in the form of directly assisting others. As I said, he seems to have a lot to offer – but doesn’t really do so here. Back to DBMormon, as I recall the outcome of that discussion was to ask him to stop doing that and I think he did. It’s a little different in that with Bill we could see the handwriting on the wall and he was already on his way out (of here and the church) at that point. My main concern was that someone is just trying to generate revenue for his site by posting in places like this. I visited churchistrue’s site again (without an adblocker, I usually use adblockers) and it seems devoid of ads. That said, it does not appear he’s trying to generate revenue by directing people to his site, nor do the podcasts themselves contain ads. This is unlike DBMormon’s page which did contain ads. That being the case I have no other objection, I just wish churchistrue participated here more regularly.

GuestI thought that at one time there was a policy about not coming here with the sole intent to promote a blog/sell a book. I didn’t immediately find it, so I asked. July 28, 2020 at 4:38 pm #339937Anonymous
GuestI only listened to the first podcast. I did like it and would like to listen to the rest when things slow down a little bit for me. For me, I appreciate that Churchistrue has sketched out the whole of the 12 episodes. It is a limited series of a sorts. It is his own “12 step” plan to conceptualizing and interfacing with Mormonism after a faith crisis.
I agree that there are some similarities and differences to Bill Reel / DBMormon. I hope that with Churchistrue’s 12 episode plan that it will be less likely to drift into anti territory. I believe that if you interview a never ending stream of people disaffected from the church that you cannot help but start to view the church more and more negatively. This is partly where Churchistrue’s model is different. I also remember that DBMormon was posting links with maybe a barely minimum introduction and then never even returning to comment on or participate in the discussion that was generated.

I view this latest project by Churchistrue as a passion project. I believe he is seeking validation and approval. DJ, could you say something in response to his post to the effect that you have listened to several of the podcasts and enjoyed them or found them insightful … something like that. If my hunch is correct that will be enough for him to feel heard and validated.
I agree that it would be nice to get more participation from Churchistrue.

GuestRob is not trying to monetize his podcast and only has 12 episodes. He is a publicity hound and that is all he is looking for. -
