GuestQuote:Based on OON’s PM to us all…any new concerns from anyone that any action should be taken? I don’t see anything has changed much and I’m not too concerned with it. Others?
I didn’t get an OON PM, or it’s so old I’ve forgotten. I will say this much:
http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7058 ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7058 http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7187 ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://forum.staylds.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7187 jgaskill and churchistrue sitting in a tree…
😈 I think there may have been another thread at one point. My only contribution is that if there’s another “churchistrue is awesome” thread (and I don’t have a problem with this) then the new one should be locked and the old one(s) should be bumped.

You mean something like this?
{Moderator note: In order to keep our comments section organized we are locking this new “churchistrue is awesome” thread and directing everyone who wishes to post on the awesomeness of churchistrue to post in the older “churchistrue is awesome” thread that can be reached by following this link…}

GuestI didn’t get the PM either. But if I’m understanding correctly I agree with Nibbler and Roy. This is not the first time jgaskill has posted about how much he loves churchistrue’s blog. Side note, CIT hasn’t visited here in over a month (Nov. 11). December 17, 2015 at 11:31 pm #304295Anonymous
GuestNice Moderating job Heber. Trying not to be a broken record but I don’t feel comfortable being the advertising agency for singular blogs. December 18, 2015 at 12:30 am #304296Anonymous

 I’ll have to do that next time.

GuestSorry…I assumed everyone got copied on it…but here was the PM: Quote:Church is True Website

Dear Admins,
Thank you so much for what you do. I think one of the most important aspects of this site is that it is closely monitored for abuse and as such, the community that has built up here seems focused on the purpose of this site.
So, with that in mind, I would like to bring one item to your attention. We have a user named ‘churchistrue’ who started a new website in September and uses StayLDS as an advertising venue. I had to laugh back in October when he said in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7034 that his most recent post had “kicked up quite a storm”. I looked at his blog and he had something like 5 comments left there. Even after linking it from StayLDS and the passage of time, there are 11 comments.
Since his first post on StayLDS in September, he has referenced his website in 10 out of 59 posts.
More interesting is another user jgaskill, who joined in June. I have a suspicion that jgaskill is the brother, sister, cousin, friend of churchistrue, if not actually the same person. Four of jsaskill’s 25 posts have been praise for churchistrue.com, including three threads he/she started specifically to point StayLDSers to that site. Two of those topics he/she started were on the same day that churchistrue linked to his blog that “kicked up a storm”. These are viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7057 and viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7058. And then today, we have another: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7187.
One interesting corollary is that churchistrue has referenced his blogs in 16.9% of his posts. The other user, jgaskill, has referenced the website in 16% of his/her posts.
The whole thing just seems really suspicious.
And even if it is totally innocent, I’m not sure StayLDS is the right place for what appears to be recruitment to a blog.
My response to him was that we are moderating it but appreciate the concern and heads up on it.I then moved the thread to Reviews section and I think we keep doing that for any posts that are just links and reviews of other sites, books, or media. Again, i feel better when someone posts a review and discusses it…not just posting a link and advertising it.
Please all keep an eye out for that. As DJ said, CIT hasn’t been on the site for over a month, so perhaps the matter just kinda goes away…maybe he had his faith crisis…a huge motivation to DO SOMETHING, did the website, advertised it here…and after feedback and stuff is settling in with realizing it isn’t all so urgent, just a hobby.

GuestI definitelydon’t think it’s the same person. The churchistrue guy shares his posts as himself in a closed FB group. I think it’s more coincidence than anything. Gaskill probably posted those two initial reviews on the same day as the CIT “storm” because that was the first exposure he had to the CIT website. I’m guessing his more recent review was just reiterating what a difference the CIT website made for him, he wants to spread the word about something that helped him because he thinks it will help others. We all do that, tell everyone we like something as if we are telling it to them the first time even though we’ve told them 100 times already.
🙂 Re: kicking up a storm. The storm wasn’t here or in the comments for the blog article, it was at NOM. Boy did that one get out of hand. He also posted that same CES letter article on some exmormon site. I didn’t see the reaction there but I can imagine.
So CIT isn’t exclusively advertising at StayLDS. He cast a wide net with the CES Letter article and I believe he found it difficult to keep all the plates spinning. CIT has added 4 blog entries in November and for what it’s worth I haven’t seen him link to any of those… but my participation has been sparse of late.

GuestI just wanted to point out that jGaskill has been on a wild FC roller coaster ride of late. On 1-9-15 he posts:
Quote:Since I first wrote on this subject back in Aug. I have had a change of heart concerning the temple. I have come to embrace temple worship by concentrating on Jesus Christ and not the masonic symbolism. I think prayers are answered more readily in the temple and our heavenly father recognizes the sacrifice made to attend . I would recommend the temple for all !!!!!!
On 1-11-15 he posts:
Quote:I have learned that the BOM is just a fraud like Joseph Smith and the LDS church no other way to explain it !!!!!!!!!! No other religion has so many secrets or controversies , their I said it !!

GuestOn Own Now sent ChurchIsTrue a PM and copied me, asking him to dial down his blog promotion. It was a very well-worded, kind message, and I concurred in my response. I told him it would be fine to excerpt a paragraph or two from his blog posts and share them here for discussion, minus the links to his blog. I will let you how he responds.

GuestI think DB Mormon needs to stop promoting his podcasts as well, if we are going to enforce this etiquette rule with churchistrue. Do you agree?
May 17, 2016 at 5:46 pm #304303Anonymous
GuestYes, we have talked about that in the past and not taken a firm stance – but it probably is the only consistent way to handle things. What do you all think?
May 17, 2016 at 5:53 pm #304304Anonymous
GuestWhile CIT does sometimes chime in on a discussion, he more often posts to promote his blog, IMO. The same is true of DBM. CIT’s blog is good and is very consistent with the purposes of the forums. I would be much more comfortable with the idea of excerpting some thoughts from his blog for discussion as opposed to “go read my blog.” I feel the same way about linking any article or blog – highlighting thoughts and points from the article in the forum post is much more useful. GuestDJ, would you mind talking with Bill about this – explaining that we don’t want one standard for some people but another one for someone else? I think it’s fine to mention CIT explicitly in that conversation, and you might add that we can’t favor or appear to favor one type of blog / podcast over another – except those at the extremes.

GuestIf it is DJ or Roy…can you at the same time just ask if it is OK we change his account so he doesn’t have moderator privileges? It’s not related to the issue or podcast ads…just simply he isn’t moderating…unless he has interest in doing so. I suspect he won’t mind having that access changed.
