I suspect my question is answered somewhere on this website, but I can’t seem to find it. So…

Now that I am down the rabbit hole of church history and making progress toward rebuilding my testimony, I would like to know if there are any other “surprises” that I haven’t yet heard of. I would prefer to deal with the unknown right now rather than being blindsided once again at a later point.

Can someone direct me to a good source that lays it all on the table without being anti? Feel free to pm if you would prefer.

I will try to find a thread or two about that and provide links.

This one probably is the best post, since it links to a good blogpost about historical issues. The thread itself probably won’t contribute to answering your question.

Unfortunately the whole blog has been deleted. Did anyone take a copy of the post before it was deleted?

Rough Stone Rolling is the best book for this in my own estimation. It is an honest book from a believing scholar. Everything else that might have happened from MMM to the Mall, I can understand as the work of good men doing their best with limited “light and knowledge.” But JS reportedly would sit and talk to angels for hours, He had visions of the heavens opened to him, He performed miracles right? For me to rebuild my faith I had to start with a better understanding of Joseph.

Thank you all so much! Who would have thought that a crisis of faith could turn into a treasure chest of information. I am currently reading RSR and will spend more time on such sites as Mormonstories, Mormonthink, Mormonmatters, FAIR…I am really quite excited that there are so many places to get the facts as they are, without the worry of it being an anti-mormon agenda.

I think I also heard about an annual conference for folks such as ourselves. Is this true? Has anyone from here attended?

If you hang in there you might even come out on the other side with a renewed testimony (Although much more complex and nuanced ). For me the best thing that ever happened to my relationship with God was a faith crisis. Now I don’t feel like I have to fit into believing evolution is wrong (or any other “hairy” topic for that matter) now my religion is MY religion, not a set of things I feel I have to believe in. I can in all honesty say that I have never felt as close to my Heavenly Father as I have done lately. And I have gone through lots of questioning regarding polygamy, kinderhook plates, polyandry, Freemasons etc etc…

Keep digging – the truth shall set you free! (Even if the truth is that JS – or any other leader – turns out to be highly flawed people that made bad and good decisions).

(But remember to always keep renewing your testimony)

    :)

I’m impressed with your range of sources. The maxwell institute also has some good articles (especially from when it was FARMS). Having said that, a few of their articles were some of the most challenging to my faith.

Mormonthink is not as objective as they claim but is at least a good place to read all the critiques in one place. It’s worth reading FAIR in parallel. Both MT and FAIR challenge each other on different points and come out with different ‘wins’ in different places.

I’ve also found Wikipedia a great resource. It’s always well-sources. But again, is mainly edited by ‘non-believers’ who have some bias against. But at least can be called out if they go too far.
