CWald access to his account and PM’s

CWald would really like to have access to his account in order to have access to his PMs and to be able to contact friends from this site. For personal-emotional-attachment reasons too, he would really like his account restored (un-deleted) so that his alien avatar appears with his posts, for the sake of his Internet Mormonism participation legacy.

Ellen and I went out to dinner with them (Cwald and Jwald) last month. They visit Wash DC once a year, usually for a school/work trip in the summer, so I try to see them when they are in town. I’ve been friends with him for many years online too. I know he can be a cranky pain in the ass occasionally, but 95% of the time he’s a decent guy

If you guys are OK with the above level of access, I will take personal responsibility for him and take care of any problems (including shutting him down again if he becomes a problem). He did participate here for a long time, and is one of the original gangsters here. I will make sure he understands he isn’t supposed to participate in the public discussions. I might even custom modify his user account so that he can’t post, just read and use the messaging system.

I would also have to figure out the technical feat of restoring an account. It looks like there’s a server-side tool I can use to re-link things.

What are your thoughts? Any strong objections?

I’m on the periphery of this, but having him return (“supervised”) sounds good to me. What bothered me most was him misrepresenting things – and Ray especially – over at NOM. I get that people who participate both places mighty have different styles/content at each site, but that wasn’t quite what he did.

He’s a fellow Oregonian, and someone I may meet IRL “sometime,” so I hope it works out. Whatever you all decide, though.

This one was such a messy one and I get over protective, it’s a mom thing. I also want our table available for a fellow traveler in need. This journey is hard enough. Thanks for offering to be the parole officer on this Brian . I think letting him be able to get in touch personally with friends may be helpful, most of his other doors are closed.

I am fine with it – with only one concern:

I don’t want him to try through PMs to get people to quit participating or leave the site – or use PMs to criticize people here or say things that would get him banned if he said them in the public forum. He can do that at NOM; i don’t want him doing it here.

Yeah … that really is the main problem that got him into trouble more than once.

And I will tell him he is not supposed to cause trouble in PMs. He can use that to stay in touch with a few of the folks he is friends with here. I have no problem pulling the cord if he causes problems.

I was thinking of Cwald today when the following lines came over the radio:

I installed the server tool to do special support tasks in the forums. I reconnected Cwald’s account to his posts. I also changed him to the “Guests” group and gave him custom persmissions (restrictions, really). He has read-only access to the forums, so he should not be able to even post or reply. I tested his account, and the buttons don’t even appear. I allowed him to keep permissions active to use the Private Messaging, email and chat systems.

I also told him to behave himself

Just let me know if anything looks quirky on the site (it shouldn’t), or if you ever have problems with him messaging people. I’ll cut him off if needed, no problem.
