GuestI haven’t read the entire thing closely, but it looks like some sand is moving. Quote:Oaks declared himself devoted to both church doctrine and the laws of a democratic society. But when conflicts between them arise and are decided, citizens of a democracy must follow court rulings, he said.
Quote:“Constitutional duties, including respect for the vital principle of separation of powers, are fundamental to the rule of law. Government officials must not apply these duties selectively according to their personal preferences — whatever their source,” Oaks said. “A county clerk’s recent invoking of religious reasons to justify refusal by her office and staff to issue marriage licenses to same-gender couples violates this principle.”

Guest:thumbup:  I agree, this is good. I know I have said this before and I may sound like a broken record, but I think Oaks has softened considerably on the issue in the past year or so – and being that he stands a very high chance of becoming president that’s a very good thing. I’d love to read the entire text of the talk.October 21, 2015 at 2:11 am #305296Anonymous
GuestVery encouraging. I hope that some of the less judicially minded church members are noting his counsel. We don’t just take our ball and go home as citizens. He’s not quite saying Jesus would bake the cake, but he is saying render unto Caesar. October 21, 2015 at 1:23 pm #305297Anonymous

GuestI just read this transcript this morning. I wish he would give that as a conference talk. It does seem he is backing off. It is a good move and backing off the “it is us against the world and you need to die on your sword over these issues!” DarkJedi wrote:(Does anyone else find it interesting that church videos are Youtube videos yet Youtube is blocked at church?)
YES! In my building there isn’t good Internet (we would have to get an expensive business line pulled) and on top of that we get really bad cellular connections. It really tries my testimony.October 21, 2015 at 5:45 pm #305299Anonymous
GuestI’m glad about this – it seems consistent with Article of Faith #12. October 22, 2015 at 1:05 pm #305300Anonymous
GuestYoutube is a good way to get a message out to the masses. It’s also a good place to watch things that are inappropriate in church. I’m not too surprised by the block, but I would expect all videos on lds.org to be on an unblocked host. I suspect the church puts videos up on their host in addition to youtube to reach a wider audience. Sounds like Oaks finally got around to section 134 in his daily scripture reading.

GuestI just read he entire transcript of his speech. WOW!
It is excellent – and it includes a direct smackdown of some of my personal friends in the Church.
