I’m keeping this up here for privacy’s sake. The returned mission president/former AA I sometimes talk about on the forum is David Cook. He was my oldest son’s MP. He’s a guest on the Mormonland podcast this week talking about missionary phone calls. He’s not exactly in the same place on my personal idol pedestal as Uchtdorf, but he’s close. If you listen you’ll see why and why I bring him up here.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will listen tomorrow. Bednar is in town as well as 2 members of the president of the 70’s. I’ve decided I have a cold.

Sounds like something big is happening there. Is there an insurrection?

No I think we are having a “You will fall in line” type deal.

Our stake has had 3 top GA’s visit in the past 2 years. We are nothing special over here, but shoot and be-danged they keep showing up. This time they were here for like 3 days holding firesides, trainings, etc.

    mom3,

Do you live in a populated area with lots of Mormons (lots being relative for the mission field)?

Our stake hosted Bednar for a worldwide devotional a few years back and around that same time I think… Holland? came to our stake to host a multi-stake, parents don’t come because we’re already breaking the fire code, fireside. Neil Andersen hosted a similar fireside and Bednar may have come back, my memory is sketchy on Bednar’s second visit – that one may have been a broadcast. We’ve also had some visiting GAs show up for stake conferences. All within an 18 month period.

We didn’t have an insurrection brewing or anything like that. I think the visits were more related to the church growing like gangbusters in my area and because there are three stakes in my county alone. It makes it easy for a leader to personally minister to several stakes over the course of one weekend.

Maybe the leaders are just traveling more?

I mean, if there’s an insurrection in my area I’d like to think that I’d know about it… or be invited to join… or something. ;)

Hmmm. Interesting. We haven’t had a GA here in 5 years next month – the last time we changed SP. The last apostle was well over 10 years ago, it was Perry.

So, either Nibbler is right and they’re paying some attention to growing areas of the church (ours is not growing, our mission is being eliminated) or there is insurrection elsewhere and we’re toeing the line here.

Truth is I’d rather they didn’t come anyway – especially Bednar. Our SP has dropped hints that our fall SC may have an actual GA as opposed to an AA.

We’ve had Anderson, Acosta, now Bednar. Plus members of the President of the 70’s.

One email said we could/should stand when Bednar walked in, but that he didn’t have time for shaking hands afterward.

Like Nibbler’s post when they swoop in, they swoop in. Always an extra fireside, all day PH training, then Stake Conference.

I want to yell “Get off my lawn.”

They don’t bring anything new. It’s either repeat or lecture. We get that every other week in RS/PH.

My daughter has twice had Dallin H. and two months ago it was Christofferson. She and I both know why- her area is losing Millenials like autumn leaves. They are just gone.

My husband knows a ton of ex-mos in the areas. Many of them were invited to meet with Elder B. during his stay.

I think that means we must be losing ground here in the Mission Field. Teams are being sent to pull us back.

Funny thing was I was told yesterday my name came up in a meeting during this time. Don’t know what it means, but I really don’t want my name moving along some chain – one way or the other.

This was a great podcast. Both speakers were upbeat and engaging.

I am worried about the militant MP’s. We have one over here. The ones who insist on once a transfer.

    I love the Mom, too.

Geez – we are a crapper of a culture. I am so tired of hard liners.

I am voting David Cook for GA.

College students do great when they can call home. They don’t call every day. Most of them graduate.

I’ll have to check out the podcast.

I knew a David Cook in high school that, unbeknownst to me at the time, was Mormon. I checked, not the same David Cook.

We love our cilices. It’s almost become a show of devotion, a way we can show the extent of our love by increasing what how much we’re willing to endure for the cause.

My wife and I both served missions and we had a chat about how often we would have called home if it were okay to call home when we served. We were both on the same page, we wouldn’t have called very often.

Twice a year, the call was something to look forward to for nearly everyone but, depending on the parent, the call home could become an unwanted obligation. I can imagine some missionaries dealing with, “It’s been two months since you’ve called. Your friend Rob is on a mission and he calls his mom every week to let her know how he’s doing.” and missionaries with parents like that are they type where having a rule known by both parties can end up sparing them.

The hardliners. Maybe they can start showing the depth of their devotion by enduring the hardship of loosening up a little. :P

Full disclosure I do from time to time exchange emails with Br. Cook and we have talked in person. We do have a current email discussion about culture going on. My son interacts with him fairly often.

I think one of the great things about David is that he is very forthright about saying what he said in the podcast – if Mom calls with a concern, the church listens. He has given me examples in the past of MPs who were sent home early because of egregious unrighteous dominion. He always makes it clear they were good men doing what they thought was right – it just wasn’t right. He thinks the militant ones on this issue will fall in line because the policy is clear – but it might take a mom making a call. I’m actually curious about what’s happening in this mission and I haven’t asked the elders yet. I think I have mentioned before that our current guy is a tyrant. Some of his rules go directly against this policy (like not using church computers) – but I don’t know if that’s changed.

And David has a theory about why he won’t be a GA. He has been an AA and SP in addition to MP, and he does have some high level contacts. His inside men tell him the Q15 think he’s too liberal.

We did have a nearly 90 minute video chat with our son today. It was nothing short of great. He plans to try to video chat about once a month, audio chat more frequently but not weekly (last week he couldn’t even email because of internet issues there). His MP emailed parents asking to hold the calls to 30 minutes “out of respect for companions.” My son’s companion was on another computer at the same house taking just as long as he did. I’m not going to complain that the 30 minute limit is against policy simply because I know my son and I have no intention of heeding something that ridiculous and there’s absolutely no way for him to enforce it.

    Well we wouldn’t want that!

In support of that – here are a couple of comments from Stake Conference this weekend.

From Elder B. “Don’t look to the scriptures for history. Look to them for the future.” and “Rely on true doctrine. Not on people and their perspectives.” and “We will need prophets and apostles until we are all unified.”

Yeah, Brother Cook doesn’t fit. Which is too bad, all boats, ships, planes and people need a right side and a left side. Otherwise you can’t move forward.
