“Depression: More than a bad hair day, tax deadline, or discouraging moment,”

    Quote:

In a session of BYU’s Women’s Conference, speakers Amy C. Curtis and Rebecca H. Jackson, basing their remarks on a talk given by Elder Jeffery R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in October 2013 conference, gave advice on how to combat depression and the many trials it can bring to those suffering it.

    The key quote for me:

    Quote:

“People with depression yearn for spiritual feelings and the warmth of God’s love, she said, but their symptoms often make it hard to sense and feel the Spirit’s positive comfort.”

This is a really interesting admission. It has certain implications. I’ve seen this “symptom” in friends and family and experienced it in myself. It makes me wonder whether sometimes spiritual feelings are conditional your emotions or brain being “wired” a certain way.

I also appreciate the church and its culture (BYU) being more open about this issue.

Good quote. Since “feeling the Spirit” is really an emotional response (and I mean that in a positive light), it makes perfect sense to me that depression and perhaps other mental illness could certainly dampen the effects. Mac, you have enlightened me already today – this will definitely get some ponder time.

    Absolutely.

If you are interested, I have written seven posts on my personal blog that deal directly with depression in one way or another. You can see them all at the following link:

My DW is dealing with depression plus, paranoia & maybe bipolar. It isn’t easy for her.

I thank God for an understanding family, good doctors & good medication.

She doesn’t want to take the medication. It makes a world of difference when she takes it.
