I think it is important to understand this distinction, especially if we want to avoid doing to others what we hate when done to us.
Another way to look at it is the following:
If I don’t understand someone’s belief well enough to articulate it accurately to someone else, I can’t disagree with it. I only can assert that the person is wrong.
