One of my Sunday School students asked a great question near the end of our lesson on the Godhead. It was an open question and answer lesson, and she had asked what “begotten” means.

I explained that it means “born of” and how different people over time have interpreted that (ranging from the Immaculate Conception to physical sexual intercourse), and I stressed that, with our modern understanding of alternative methods of conception and birth (not now and as distinct future possibilities), it could mean any number of things now. She then said:

    Quote:

    “So, was Jesus a demi-god?”

I told her that is exactly what he was in the Biblical story – and that such a story would have fit perfectly in that time and was one of the reasons the Holy Roman Empire used Christianity as the basis of their attempt to consolidate a state religion. After class, privately, I told her that she will be surrounded by people all her life who take everything literally but that I can accept and love the story itself and the concepts of a Savior, Redeemer, Son of God, Atonement, etc. even if I personally don’t take everything literally. I told her to pursue her own understanding but respect others who come to different conclusions than hers.

She’s a really good, really bright kid – and her parents are very orthodox.
