Just to put it out there, the actual commandemnt says:

    Quote:

    (1) Remember the Sabbath Day to (2) keep it holy.

I tihnk we miss the mark greatly when we abbreviate that wording to “keep the Sabbath”. Doing so opens the door for the kind of list-making toward which the title question points.

I don’t shop every day anyway so It’s not a huge inconvenience for me to not shop on Sunday usually.

Although back when my singles ward used to have little potluck dinners on Fast Sundays I would sometimes buy something for the dinner.

We’ve done that occasionally, as well, for Sunday evening meals at church – and the irony never fails to make me smile. :D

If someone chooses to work sundays, then that is their choice, and me not patronizing their services denies them some part of their choice. i think everyone should have a day if rest, but it is up to them as to when and how.

i found it quite interesting that GAs often have no issue buying services or traveling on Sundays. when i was putting on a conference on my mission as several GAs were going to visit the city where I was ZL and they were considering making it a stake, I carefully planned meals and logistics to make it possible for them to nit buy anything on sunday. They completely blew me off, and purchased meals from local restaurants, offending the members that had prepared meals for them (to our specifications). Reason? policy.

I have a strong feeling that the GAs and the “brethren” have a completely different set of rules than that which they inflict on members…

Amen. And there lies the crux of some of my own issues.

Generally speaking, they don’t inflict lots of the rules on members. It’s been a LONG time, for example, since I’ve heard a talk by a general authority that lists what should and should not be done on Sunday.

The ones doing the inflicting tend to be members and local leaders.

Yes, I spend money on Sunday. I don’t go out of my way to plan shopping trips or anything. My wife does most of the shopping and she tries to shop on other days.

I have nothing against people that are able to make Sunday into a weekly retreat/respite, I think that would be kinda cool. I had a missionary companion that missed having the Sunday as a special day since we worked everyday. But this was never part of my upbringing and not spending money on Sundays wouldn’t bring me measurably closer to a spiritually contemplative sabbath.

And so whoever got the last word in set the standard for the teaching/doctrine/policy, or whatever you want to call it, on what should and shouldn’t be done. There is no half-life on prophetic pronouncements. The ones that aren’t so useful or get past the “use by” date just kind of turn moldy. Nobody ever bothers to throw them out.
