    I agree with you, and I think knowing your audience and picking battles is a compassionate approach.

    There have been times I’ve quoted the Dalai Lama by just saying, “Someone once said…” and found the quote was very accepted by others at church as thought provoking and wise. I do think most members are skeptical if it is buddhist teachings, but on the other hand, I hear general conference talks reference CS Lewis or other non-mormons all the time.

    That’s a good point, and it’s just because it’s exotic. But the thing is that once upon a time, Christianity was an exotic eastern cult to my ancestors. (And the irony is that they would have probably been practising Druidism, which would be exotic today).

    In sacrament meeting last Sunday someone actually says “C.S. Lewis, who should have been a member of our church….”
