I’m skeptical because I haven’t had anything meaningful in dreams, or perhaps I don’t draw much meaning from them and forget or discard them easily.

My religious framework requires a largely non-interventionist God. If God were to intervene on a regular basis then I would expect more consistency and evidence of his hand in such things. If I believed that God regularly communicates to men I would have to ask why He did not see fit to alert me or my wife as our unborn daughter died inside her. So for my own personal peace and sanity, I do not believe in such things (except maybe in exceptional circumstances like restoring the church). I do suspend disbelief as far as it pertains to other peoples experiences. (IOW, in my world grass is green. This does not mean that in some other part of the world [or even on other worlds  ] grass cannot be hot pink. Just that in my experience it is green and I function within that framework.)

There’s nearly ALWAYS something meaningful in dreams. Sometimes the meaning is obscure, but invariably they can tell you something about your inner state which you’re not registering consciously, and they’re couched in non-logical fashion.

I’ve had about 3 dreams in my life that are meaningful (horrific nightmares), and I am not going to share much of it because they were for me.

I will say this much ONLY….there are spirits assigned to destroy my soul. They’ve done pretty good so far…but they missed a key element: in the midst of my struggle, I am learning compassion,..and that makes them angry.

I hope the rest of their efforts backfire. 🙂

Perhaps. During my greatest stressful time of life when I was struggling to keep myself in control of life, at my very low points, I neither had any dreams nor felt any Spirit or God walking beside me. I was just exhausted.

Life has turned for me the past year, and I am probably happier than I’ve ever been, and I’m relaxed and not stressed at all and have lots of love in my life. I have dreams almost nightly. Last night it was about work, and people were talking behind my back about how I do things. I woke up thinking about a list of things I want to work on to better my professional skills. That can be valuable to me to learn from those thoughts.

    Are they from God?

I kinda think like Roy does on this. But stay open to learning. But if God is involved…why now when I’m in a good place and why not back during my crisis when I needed help?

I don’t want to know what the flying crocodiles were about, then.

But yeah, now that I think about it, Claudia and Denise did remind me to buy another jug of honey.

Dreams tell you things you don’t want to know as well as 1990s actresses and models.

I think most dreams including spiritual ones are not from God.

Dreams can be useful – certainly providing early warning signs about health, creative solutions to problems etc. It’s sometimes a matter of trying to understand the vocabulary which is symbolic and illogical. You yourself are best positioned to understand the personal references.

Regarding having no dreams… it’s just that you forgot them at the time. I’ve always found them best as a guide to the inner life and only after then the outer world.

That crocodiles will be learning to fly within my lifespan? That should make wingshooting season a lot more fun.

My dream dictionary says it’s the flying idolatrous god of Pharaoh.

Aw crap. Then I guess we’re going to go from Emperor Obama to someone who will leave us with no choice but to wander around the desert.

This is an interesting discussion. Russ, it’s funny you mentioned a premonition about 9/11 happening. I’ve had a dream about that too. In this dream, I was standing at a table in room and staring at what look like tie tacks of the United States and other various countries of the world. When I woke up I learned from the tv news about the terrorist attacks of the Pentagon and the Twin Towers of New York. Wow! Rob, I’m heard of a similar quote from Joseph Smith. I can’t understand that. The only thing is early church history and the scriptures talked about these miraculous experiences quite often. Were they wrong in doing that? Did they really not happen that often at all? Or do people just lack faith now because of our ease of modern technology? Hmm. It makes me wonder.

There are some scientific explanations for dreams that seem to be predictive (I won’t go into them now) but again, I don’t think it right to insist that every significant meaningful dream has little to do with events outside of the dreamer. And dreams (regardless of your belief system) can be useful. I never realized how traumatic my mission was for me until after my mission I had a recurring nightmare of being a missionary again. I still have that dream occasionally even though I’m nearly 50 years old. I’ve spoken with others who have the same kind of recurring dream (again, it’s usually those who found their missions difficult).

You MUST go read “Way Below the Angles” from Craig Harline. A GREAT funny book that has a good message about his very hard mission in Europe back about 40+ years ago AND about how he had nightmares about being called again – and how many others he mentioned it to also had the nightmare. I am not much of a reader, but I had a hard time putting the book down until I finished it.

Erm, not really. If you are dreaming about crocodiles (and something tells me you’re probably not), then you should not be so literalist in your interpretation.

Depending on your inclinations, flying is often suggested to be representative of sex,(1) and crocodiles are long, slitty snouts with teeth, i.e. vagina dentata (2) or penis dentata (3). It suggests you’re scared of getting your genitals bitten off while in an aeroplane.

Of course, I could be completely off in my interpretation here. :lolno:

(I’m going to nominate this as one of my most unusual posts.)

    Footnotes

1 – “The dream of flying around is released your sexual tension [sic] and being free.” http://dreamstop.com/flying-dreams/

2 – “The Mundurucu of Brazil call the vagina the “crocodile’s mouth”” (I can’t provide the link – too fruity for this website)

3 – “The Gender Inverted version of the trope, “Penile Dentata”, usually in the form of oblong objects or creatures with teeth or spikes, is not entirely unheard of” http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VaginaDentata
