GuestI just wanted to drop in and say hi to everyone. I’ve been reading some of the latest posts and seeing some familiar names. It has been six months since I last posted or participated in any way and I thought I would give you an update. In August I decided that I needed a sabbatical from church. It was a very good decision. The anger I had been feeling has lessened and I’m able to attend church on my own terms. I don’t think I’ll be able to teach a lesson or hold a calling for awhile yet but I am able to attend with my family which is important to them.
My worldview has exploded and I see the world very differently but I can still see some goodness in attending church. I don’t know how the community will react to my specific needs over the long term but for now my ward seems to be indifferent. They have busy lives and with the exception of 2 or 3 people, no one seemed to notice my absence. This surprised me at first but I was also relieved. My first time back was uneventful and I continue to feel quite comfortable attending church on my own terms.
I’ve enjoyed the conversations I’ve been reading. Such thoughtful people comment here and it is refreshing.
Happy New Year. I’m planning on 2012 being a very peaceful and joyful year. I hope that for all of you as well.

GuestThanks for stopping by and giving an update! It’s good to hear your break was helpful…I agree with you and think that is a good strategy some times. I am sure more people in your ward have noticed, but like you said, they often are so busy with their own lives, they keep moving forward. I hope you have a great New Year with your family and your new outlook at church!!

GuestInteresting…the number of times I’ve heard people discourage any kind of sabbatical (I love that term!!) from Church is astounding. They say “someone said they were taking a vacation from Church, and then we never saw them ever again”… but I honestly believe it can be refreshing as you say. Provided one keeps up with their personal spirituality in other ways — having family tugging you in that direction really helps too. I’m glad you’re not bothered by the fact no one missed you. I think that’s a healthy attitude, and like you, I have feelings of relief when that happens — mixed feelings too, though, as it’s nice to know that people notice when you aren’t around, if community is important to you. If not, it probably doesnt’ matter much…
Anyway, welcome back!!!

GuestGlad things are going well. Good to have you back! I do think a sabbatical can help in some cases. Sounds like you are in a better place now, so that’s great! January 3, 2012 at 4:13 pm #249025Anonymous
GuestGreat to hear from you. I’ve been wondering lately what you were up to and how you were doing. I think I remember reading Eugene England suggesting that a vacation from church can be a healthy thing, though I know that’s a very unpopular notion for some — part of satan’s plan and all that. I would love to take six months off, but the best I can do is a week or two now and again. Even that can help.

I’m glad you are doing alright; it’s always nice to get an update from people you haven’t heard from in a while. Sometimes I wonder what people that used to post here like Rix and Euhumerus are up to now so it’s good to have some come back and make a few comments.
