Bednar, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his wife, Sister Susan Bednar, will answer questions from youths around the world in an online “Face to Face” event on May 12, 2015, at 6 p.m. MST.
Youths are invited to watch a live stream of the event and participate by submitting questions through social media. Questions can be submitted before the event by commenting on the lds.org/youth website. During the event, comments can be submitted on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram by using #LDSface2face.
I think this is awesome and having spoken to several deep thinking youth I posted this question on the site. And yes I would absolutely love an answer to the same as well!
I have been trying lately to talk to my kids about the new LDS.org Gospel topics essays and helping them navigate these complex issues. One in particular, I could use some help addressing with them. – What are we to make of the new Race and Priesthood essay where the present Church acknowledges that past Church leaders were wrong about things like inter-racial marriage and righteousness in the pre-existence for over a hundred years? What implications does this have in terms of following our leaders and not being led astray? I ask this seriously as it is a hot topic in my own house as well as other youth that I speak with. The real issue seems to be how does one navigate which Church teachings are true Doctrine and which aren’t and what to do when one feels opposed strongly to a specific teaching?

GuestThat sounds like a really great idea from the Church. My concern though would be filtering the questions heavily in favor of “good questions,” or ones that won’t be controversial to the majority of TBMs. I’ll be out at the MTC by this time, but I’ll see if I can get word on how this goes. That is stillTHEbiggest issue I have with my faith transition. The only way I can wrap my head around some of the history of what has happened and been said by church leaders is to really have a big section called “humans just like me” and it requires me to be compassionate towards leaders – past and present. I am a logical person at heart. I think about what system would a just God put in place? If humans that feel they are being inspired can be wrong at times, what safeguard would God provide to help me as an individual from following a fallen prophet? I come back to the holy ghost is given to me. So I am kind of fine with that. But then I feel that the church leaders are significantly overstepping when they say in conference, “We will not, we CAN NOT lead you astray.” I feel they are telling the church – ignore what the spirit of Christ tells you, or the bible, or your conscience, and follow us since we trump them all”. I am still wondering what I am going to say/do in the upcoming priesthood lesson on “the 14 fundamentals of following the prophet.” I will not be able to stay and just listen to the entire message without saying something. GuestI can’t say how this one will turn out, but Elder Bednar did a surprise one last month in Denver. My daughter said he just took the questions as they came. She liked his answers, I was 50/50 on them. But I love that he is stepping out and trying to begin an engagement of openness. I have heard from two or three sources that the The Top 15 are still debating if it’s good to do that or not, so to see him decide to go ahead is a hopeful sign. -
