Deseret News article includes in highlights:

    Quote:

You don’t have to believe in its historic claims to appreciate [the Book of Mormon] as literature,” Elder Christofferson said, quoting scholar David Bokovoy.

Considering the fair amount of controversy that surrounds Bokovoy, I think this is significant.

I find it interesting that Christofferson was also the apostle that said publicly, “You can support gay marriage and be a member in good standing as long as you are not pushing the church to change.”

What a soft spoken, mild mannered maverick.

I think he is one of a team of gentle mavericks. It will be long for them, but I cheer every inch they cover.

It sounds like more of the same. What am I missing?

    Quote:

Religion is not simply being marginalized; it is under attack.

And in religious communities “secularism is not simply being marginalized; it is under attack.” People have got to attack something, right?

    Quote:

Today, we fight for religious freedom and liberty through civil discourse…

I hope this represents taking one step closer to recognizing that disagreements do not constitute “attacks.” I doubt it will ever be the case but I sure hope that “religious freedom” doesn’t become the church’s theme of 2017.

I also hope “religious freedom” isn’t the brethren’s theme for 2017, but it already seems that the momentum is building.
