From the above article on Church News:

    Quote:

There is no reason families need to remain in Sunday dress, said Elder Cook. “Would it be wonderful to sing gospel hymns? Yes. Would it be wonderful to sing other music or engage in other enjoyable or uplifting activities? Yes.”

“The strongest feeling is that we should not regulate families or individuals or determine what they should do,” he said.

I know lots of people who do and will struggle with this concept. I welcome our leaders saying things like this because it’s another indication that they recognize it’s not 1984 anymore.

This is a very positive change!!! Thanks for sharing, DJ. Slowly but surely, the Church is getting better.

I said as much a week ago. I am glad to see someone else agrees with me. 🙂

I love that he uses “or engage in other enjoyable or uplifting activities. (emphasis mine)

I have already engaged in an enjoyable activity today (SM wand the rest of the block were generally not anything to writer home about) – I watched part of a basketball game. My work schedule is such that I have very little time during the week to do things I enjoy. I agree that doing such an enjoyable activity on Sunday seems to be in keeping with the “spirit of the law.” I will no doubt also participate in an uplifting activity or two (I have also watched Music and the Spoken Word, which I also find enjoyable and uplifting.) I will likely also play a game with visiting family today, something else we all enjoy, and I will enjoy and be uplifted by my son’s mission email when it comes this evening. This sure opens the door that the Pharisees among us will probably not go through.
