Can’t see a thread on this yet, so starting one…

So the church has uploaded a video from Elder Snow the church historian, regards the how and why of the current release of essays.

At the moment the only positive thing I can say really is I am glad its there as it legitamises discusions of things I had previously found difficult to have due to lack of anything on lds.org.

Thanks for posting that. I feel kind of torn about all of this too. I like that they are putting their official stamp on these issues so we can discuss them more openly now, even at church. I finally brought up some of these things with my husband, because I thought he would be willing to listen if I was reading it from lds.org. But I still feel like it’s being done now because they are forced to in a way, rather than it being put on there because God inspired them to do it. It seems reactionary rather than revelatory. And there is then that question of what else have I heard that may turn out to be true? I hope they do the book of Abraham next, and also Joseph Smith polygamy. On Joseph Smith Papers website they do have something there are polyandry even, but making it more legit on lds.org would be good.

Same here, and Snow sort of alludes to it in his interview, they are only doing it because they have to… Which is a shame really, shouldn’t they have been upfront in the first place? Even his body language shouts ‘i don’t really want to be doing this’ looking rather shifty….

Something else he said I thought was interesting, he said these are the ‘authorised’ explanations of these issues, so does it logically follow that any other apologetic explanation for these issues are not-authorised, and so are they throwing FARMS and anything else under the bus?

You go to a restaurant and have a great server. Do you tip him/her differently based on their motivation?

I’m just glad the Church is doing it. I wish it had been done sooner, but we can’t change the past. I accept that the Church is changing now, and I’m happy about it. Folks like us should laud the Church for these efforts. They are doing what we have constantly called for.

The way I look at it, the ball is in my court. I need to make constructive use of the new stuff on lds.org. I hope everyone who reads it gets into 2nd and 3rd hour and makes (“appropriate”) contributions. The first lesson of the 3rd hour Joseph Fielding Smith manual: “Chapter 1: Our Father in Heaven.” Turn the page: “Beginning with Joseph Smith’s First Vision, the true knowledge of God has been restored in our day.”

I need to speak up because others do. Over at newmormon.org, someone commented that his brother’s stake president came into 3rd hour to teach that Pres. Uchtdorf really didn’t mean what he said in his conference talk; the point is (only) to “doubt your doubts.”

If we don’t take what we see as hopeful and forward-moving, and talk about it and teach it and champion it, who will?

What Ann said – and then some. I have lived for 50 years in the church, I have come to see it morph it’s directions by a myriad styles. Sometimes from the top, sometimes from the bottom. I see the essays as opening or unlocking the door. I am copying the documents in hard copy. I have been making a notebook of Mackay’s quotes from doctrinal sources, I have purchased Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith and am marking the universal topics he taught. Each week these will be the backbone of my contribution. Oh and the scriptures.

I have no wish to throw rocks at the church or any ones testimony, I just want to open the door, just like fellow brothers and sisters in the past have opened doors.

Whether Elder Snow personally wants this or not is immaterial. Even if it is all done under duress, I know that it serves not only us, but faithful scholars as well. Those men and women have carried the burden longer than I have. I also think it serves Heavenly Father well, he’s known the story for along time, and if Zion is really our responsibility, we need to get on with it. We need to own our facts, steel our faith, and spread the uplifting, untold side of the story.

Just focusing on the 1832 first vision story can change the world for the better. In my opinion. So Ann – where ever you are, on the tough days, and there will be tough days, I’m in the trench with you. Hardcopy notebook in hand.

Very well put Ann. Thanks for that.
