If I were Uchdorft, I might have used a different approach to counseling people about the Internet. I might have been general and indicated that you should visit sites that strengthen your spirituality. Sites that help you sustain your commitment to the good in the world, sites that help your testimony and pursuit of uplifting truth. I would encourage critical review of sources to make sure the information is accurate.

This kind of statement would include sites like StayLDS, I think. It would exclude sites that are constantly negative and satirical about the church, or that have questionable roots or anti-Mormon. Such an approach would NOT sound like censorship, and would acknowledge that the Internet is here to stay — force that you can’t keep people away from.

After a couple of days rolling Uchtdorf around, I am going to cut him slack. The guy spoke 3 times at General Conference. For the Women’s session he hit it out of the park. The next two were bunts. Not my favorites, but even Mickey Mantle had some bad days. I don’t know what other crazy stuff his life has going on, but I am guessing he’s human, and his heart gets tugged back and forth. The internet can be nasty, so can people, so can church. I am going to carry my favorite Uchtdorf’s in my pocket. Then do unto him, and I hope others will do to me, and let the rest go. Besides to the masses, “Ponderize” is the most important take away from Conference. Nobody but us will remember Dieter’s darker moment.

I also cut him slack. I honestly see him as nearly the only ally for the disenfranchised in the 12, that I am aware of. None of the others have come out with as many supportive comments as Uchdorft.

I personally think Ucthdorf and Holland may be closely aligned. Thereby, having two allies in the 15. I also would not throw out Christofferson as another possible ally.

I think the new apostles increase that number significantly.

Expectations are a terrible taskmaster. The best hitter in the history of baseball was celebrated for getting a hit 40% of the time. I think Pres. Uchtdorf’s batting average is significantly higher than that.
