FWIW i think YSA is one of the better programs of the church. I think gospel principles eases investigators into the church – we have so much jargon and unusual doctrine that people can’t be expected to get it straight away.

Man, I had the exact opposite problem on my mission. The teachers would always bring up topics they felt had a “Woah” factor (Plan of Salvation, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Kolob) , which scared investigators off more often than not. Gospel doctrine it always felt more normal.

I can see your POV here. But the LDS does have a complex and unique culture. Something like the Roman Catholics or even the Orthodox church has a mainstream presence in many countries, not so the LDS.

Personally I’ve long thought some of our woah factors are.actually pretty tame compared to other religions. We’re way less exotic than Scientology or Rajneesh or a lot of the New Age stuff. We may be weirder than Baptists or Quakers but we’re more mainstream than Moonies or the ones I’ve just mentioned. But we also don’t have people flopping around shrieking and making strange noises, or bodies of deceased members that don’t rot, and outside the temple we don’t have fancy costumes.

A lot of aspects of the Plan of Salvation are good though. The degrees of glory makes more sense to me than a straight heaven/hell thing with an extreme dividing line.

But yes, we do have a lot of technical vocab. New members wouldn’t know their MP or EQP from their YSA or RS. How long does a temple recommend last or is a stake president higher or lower than a regional authority?

Even today I make mistakes with it. I don’t always know which GAs are elder or president. But investigators and new members would struggle even more.
