I read a post somewhere lately that talked about why they thought the lds church was going away from the word ‘Mormon” and eliminating the pageants. It gave 4 points. One was that the church did not want to be associated with the word Mormon anymore because it wanted to become known as a mainstream Christian religion like the community of Christ (RLDS church did). Two, it wants the book of Mormon to become known just as ‘inspired’ writings.
Those points do not make sense from what I have observed. President Nelson seems to be doubling down on the church being the only true church with Jesus Christ at its head. He also challenged the women of the church to read the BoM again before the end of the year. Lots of changes are happening, but I would be VERY surprised to see us go the route of the Community of Christ / RLDS.

I think there are multiple reasons, all of which are valid.
I believe that the church does not want its reasons scrutinized and critisized. I believe they also wish to enlist support and compliance from individuals that may not be sold on the non-spiritual reasons. Most members in good standing can be motivated with these types of spiritual justifications. (You are not cleaning the chapel because OSHA, Fair labor standards act, and workman’s comp made maintaining hired janitors untenable. You are cleaning the chapel because it is good for your soul.)My dislike for this type of partial disclosure is that I am pretty confident that the reason being presented was not the reason that precipitated the change (IOW I am willing to bet that there was no brainstorming session on how to increase quality family time where someone said “get rid of pageants’). Instead my understanding of church operations is that decision makers with business backgrounds make decisions based upon practical needs and factors (and thank goodness they do! I am so thankful that our church does not have the waste and corruption as is supposedly part of the longtime vatican organization). But then they keep the practical reason secret and present the change with what I imagine to be the spiritual side benefit only.
It makes me feel as though the church leadership patronizes the church membership and does not trust the membership with certain information.

GuestI was in a Stake meeting yesterday, this piece of news was being bantered around, someone did mention that Pageants no longer are a missionary draw. The only attendee’s are members. Adding in the excess local effort – my guess is it wasn’t worth the effort. As a person who looks back to the road show, Gold & Green ball, Ward Luau days with fondness – I am sad. Especially outside of the Mormon Belt those efforts really helped build community. Created haven’s and friendships.
I also believe the church is shifting. Our last visiting GA mentioned that in Africa, the church is no longer creating wards. They are setting up church groups among members who live close by. If a member lives too far from that – all the churching is done at home. Sacrament included.
We were also told (this one does crack me up) that the grain abundance that we have stored for ages, is being sold, distributed or given away to the quickest source/bidder. (Nibbler we need a 10 commandments image here.) The plan is to create a more localized sustainable nutrition centers at various places world wide. Details still in process.
Nelson and I may not be lunch buddies, but they are moving mountains, many of which we may not even see.
If it makes us Christ dependent and anchored in love – I am all for it.

I like to complain about the church as much as the next guy – but if the new focus on home, family, and small group study is even partially to help Latter day saints in Africa to adapt the church to their circumstances…

GuestOur local pageant is heavily politicized. In fact a political candidate wrote it. -
