So, does anybody here think there could be a tie to the release of the Essays on LDS.org, and the UK court case against Pres Monson? I’m sure the church has known about this for months. Or did the court case speed up the release of the essays? Your thoughts?

Also, in the DAMU there is a rumor (what good is the internet if not for spreading rumors?) that the church is going to announce the end of the one year marriage penalty (get married civilly, wait one year for temple sealing) in the USA. Some see this tied to the court case also.

Anyway, fun things to think about.

No. No question about it. The historical release of updated information has been in the works for far longer than the UK crap. That is objectively true and incredibly easy to document. A lot of the new information is the result of the Joseph Smith Papers Project, and that was initiated LONG before this man started on his rampage.

People look for things to support their views (all of us, to some degree), and this is a greatly exaggerated way for people who should be celebrating something to dismiss and ridicule it, instead.

Seriously, one of the worst results of this level of bitterness is the ego-building (vaunting one’s self) that inevitably appears. This man is not responsible for the release of information that is happening. His belief that he is responsible is a perfect example of amazing conceit.

Highly doubtful. The church produces new content very slowly with lots of people getting to review it first. Those articles have been in the pipeline for a lot longer than the “October Surprise” has been on the cards.

I remember my Mum telling me back in May 2013 that during the Givens’ “Crucible of Doubt” tour that Terryl Givens had mentioned during the fireside that he was involved in writing a series of essays on the difficult questions. Not that they were due to write them but that they were already writing them.

I hope this happens, but I don’t think it’s connected to the rest.

This. I think this fact suggests that the essays have been in the works for months, if not years. I think access to information previously difficult to come by on the internet is the major motivation for the essays.

I think its wonderful if its true the church is considering scrapping the one year waiting period!!! Boy, if they keep on this path, the day will come that I might not have anything to complain about!!

If they do announce a scrap of the one year waiting period, I will be pleased for the people who would have been subject to it, as I was.

I wondered if the fraud charge was a stimulus for the essays, but scrapped the idea as the church doesn’t bow swiftly to public pressure — especially public pressure like the anti-Mormon kind.

I think the fraud case and the essays have the same root cause: black and white anti-science rhetoric in manuals and CES teachings in particular (whether written down or just shared verbally) are causing the faithful to fall away. These things need to be addressed and clarified. For too long, a limited interpretation has prevailed, and it’s often the wrongest one out there, but being taught and retaught due to tradition.
