I’m a computer geek at heart, and was wanting to experience a blast from the past. Thanks to the wayback machine website, I was able to put in the church website (lds.org specifically) and see over a decade and a half of website snapshots saved. I went through each year and picked out the years when the church website changed its look. I was curious if any of you remember these layouts, if you had a preferred one compared to what we have today? January 1998 –

Wow, those first few were rough. I only remember from ’99 on. Back in that era our ward had it’s own “official” web page and it was better than that. After the church’s site got better they asked all the wards to discontinue their individual sites. I kind of liked the 2003 format but what they have now isn’t terrible. At times it was a pain to find what I was looking for in the collapsible menus but they either ironed out the kinks with better headings or I got used to where things are.
The family in the 1999 shot looks a lot like we used to. Talk about flashback fear.

Speaking as a programmer, I have always admired the church’s world class website, although some things are hard to find. I really don’t know of another website with that amount of content. The front page is deceptively simple; you would never guess the ocean of data it represents. And not all data is available to everyone; leaders see more than the average member. Some things though just do not seem to fit in any of the five or six categories displayed on the front page. Fortunately, the search command usually can find something buried inside. My wife was struggling to find old conferences in ASL, but she eventually discovered where they were hiding. Most large websites suffer from a plague of dead links, but the LDS website rarely has a dead link.
