We have a new bishop and he is exuberant in a way only an American can be. He’s always hugely enthusiastic. I can’t but think this man will crash and burn. He is an expatriate, has a big family, is going big time (bigly?) for higher temple attendance. Our ward had two people submit names in all of November-December – less than 0.1% of our official numbers. He wants us to have at least six bus trips this year.

I had my priesthood performance interview (or whatever it’s called) the other day. He was pleasant enough but incredibly fidgety and I can’t help thinking his mind was running all over the place. I dealt with it the best way I thought I could and spoke slowly and at length about various subjects. It’s the only way I could deal with it!

Some people simply are high energy. It can be infectious or annoying – or both. They make great leaders in some cases and poor ones in others. I hope he doesn’t crash and burn – but I hope he can become more realistic if his idealism doesn’t produce what he wants.

Hopefully he has focus enough to stick with one goal for long enough to accomplish something….like the temple goal. There comes a point when you’ve gotten all the juice out of the ward on certain goals and its time to move on — to push harder is to tick off people and disrespect their agency.

    We have a new bishop…

    In about 5 – 7 years. ;)

I had an excitable BP once. He never did crash and burn despite having dealt with some very difficult things, which was inspirational to me. I’d probably rank (ugh, comparing people, but let me get it out) him the best BP I’ve had.

    You never know.

I also think it is possible there are people in your ward that will be very inspired by him and he may be very active and very loving and reach some people who really benefit from his energy and approach. Maybe not all, but some.

I think that often happens, different leadership styles for different needs.

Sorry, Sam…that probably doesn’t help you though.

I had a Bishop like this once…he was so zealous and ready to change the world…even his counselors told him to slow down and ratchet it back a bit or he will burn out. He never did. He had energy from somewhere to keep it up always.

When I went through my divorce he was the absolute worst and said very abusive things to me. He was not good for me. On the other hand…I have to give it him…he did so many great things for many families, I can’t deny that. He just was in over his head in my situation, and his energy didn’t help. That’s ok…I learned not to worry about it when leaders don’t come through, so I learned something anyway.

Maybe it will be a mixed bag for your ward. Some good to come out of it, and some things to just endure, all at the same time.

I’m not hoping he does burn out but I think it is a good possibility. Thing is, he’s “risen without trace” as someone said… he moved into the ward and got onto the bishopric quickly then became bishop. The interview was the first time I’d actually spoken to him properly – I didn’t know his name.

His bishopric is certainly interesting – he has an older guy who is an ex-bishop from years ago and a younger black guy. The latter is doing very well at the job and has gone from an immature boy dating every other girl to a quite serious married man in less than a year or two. Both of these are long term ward members, but I think they might just work as a team.

My hopes with the new bishop are that he is able to understand what other members go through, that he can deal with the apathy in the ward and that his regular temple trips *don’t* result in disaster. I find high energy people hard to deal with personally, and I think he will have to find ways to use that energy effectively.
