My sister is moving to Eagle this summer and I’ll be interested to interact with people at church when visiting.

I like your parallels, Ray. It also makes me think if Korihor were a real person, and I lived at that time, there might likely be things I would identify with him and even agree with him and sympathize with him. It’s never black and white like the scriptures retell the story with the bias of “Nephi and Alma were right all the time, the others were the devil working evil among men”. That’s too simplistic.

In the end, there are times when a decision to ban a person from our forum is simply the consensus and a good way to go to take care of problems without a better resolution available. I don’t think our group of moderators are all exactly at the same place on when someone should be banned and when they shouldn’t, and that is OK because those voices help us balance things out and vet out actions.

Having been part of a High Council and seeing leaders take a similar council approach makes me see it the same way. Excommunication is a valid way at times for the church to take some action when other things have been tried and problems persist. But not all members of the council are at the same place on loyalty to the church vs sympathy for the individual. I’ve been part of the debates.

And the damage control and public opinion is just the fallout of what needs to be managed to maintain trust.

If more people were to moderate internet boards, I think more people would realize it is too idealistic to keep a site on its mission and never ban.
