Sam, I was going to ask you the same question?

Am I the only one that finds it strange to keep pictures of a bearded Jesus in the temples?

If the Lord shows up tomorrow and wants to officiate in some ordinances, is he gonna have to shave?

That’s up to Salt Lake. Though it could be that the beard thing was just back then. Hard to say.

Nope, don’t find it strange at all.

I doubt he would be in the temple, and I don’t mean that as a slight in any way to temples or the people who attend them. I think he would be out working with and serving the poorest of the poor, probably in areas that have no temples.

I’ve been thinking about this beard thing. We have this image of God and Jesus with beards because of all the the popular portrayal in art, etc. and of course, the temple films but what if it’s just cultural. If the second coming were now, why would Jesus come in robe, sandals, long hair and a beard? Why wouldn’t He look like the guy next door as a test to see if we had the sense to recognize him. Just wondering.

It will take them a long time… 😆 And they’ll have to shave my feet as well. (No wonder people think I’m a Hobbit.)

Always have. And think more recently than that…

Joseph Smith was certainly clean shaven, but several of the church presidents who came after him, and knew him weren’t.

The most plausible explanation I’ve heard of this, is that it helps separate us from the [fundamentalists], i.e. those pesky polygamists who live out in the Boondocks and get on TV all the time. A lot of them seem to be bearded. And the women have bad hairdos too!

[Admin Note: “Fundies” is a slur – a term of derision – and we don’t allow slurs like that on this site, even if they aren’t meant intentionally to be derisive.]
