I just got the following note from my facebook friend, Margaret Young. I know it is short on details, but when I get them I will post more. I am sure you could message her via Facebook if you are interested. I wouldn’t call myself as having a faith crisis, but I want to go anyway!!!

    Quote:

During the first week of July, Richard Bushman and Terryl and Fiona Givens will be presenting an all-day conference for those in a faith crisis. This conference would not be helpful to ex-Mormons or to Mormons who are not struggling with aspects of their faith. If you would like to participate, please message me. Space is limited. It will be held in Provo. Future events will be held in DC, NY, and Boston.

According to this thread, yes: http://bycommonconsent.com/2013/06/10/a-discussion-of-belief-and-doubt-in-mormonism-for-those-negotiating-a-faith-crisis/

The July conference will be in Provo. You can email me at Margaret_Young@byu.edu, or message me on FB. Other conferences will be in Boston, New York, an DC later in the year.

    It will be recorded.

I’m very excited. I hope they create a really good recording of it, TED-style, and create a whole section with the full content.

I’m curious to know if someone asked them to do this conference or if they decided to do it on there own. The other thing is are they going to give us the answers to the questions that led to the FC or are they going to tell us that if you’ve had a witness of the truthfulness of the gospel, they don’t matter? Just wondering.

If the Givens recent ‘tour’ of UK is anything to go on, it will be something in the middle. I didn’t go, but a friend did and they were very open about issues and history. They certainly don’t take the ‘pray harder’ approach. It will probably also take a slightly ‘fallible prophets’ approach. Bushman might also talk about his ’21st Century reading of the book of Mormon.’ Treating it as an aporaphal product of the bible. I think the church is already nudging BoA to that, I wonder if BoM is moving there too. The sacking of the old FARMS crew would point to this.

Givens and Bushman are certainly collaborating with the church. I don’t think they are under the direction of it though.

?aporaphal. How does that fit in with the “most correct book”?

Apocryphal doesn’t have to mean incorrect. It can mean ‘of uncertain authorship.’

And I don’t read ‘most correct’ as most technically accurate and instead ‘most able to correct a course of life.’

One other thing. That phrase is not in the canon. It’s in the notes/commentary. It could be removed.

Given who the speakers are, there is no way the approach will be negative toward those who are struggling.

This is a HUGE thing, imo. It’s hard to overstate how big this is.

I know both are famous and in the case of Givens and his wife pretty charismatic but I’m not sure I understand how “big” this is. Over the years I’ve been burned but putting people on pedistals for what they seem to be and what they say or write about. It almost sounds like these people are going to somehow make us all better by there insights or level of spirituality or something. I’m trying really hard not to be sarcastic here but I’m afraid Dehlin, Farms, and a few GAs have made it hard for me to feel comfortable about being influenced by people that I expect put on their pants one leg at a time just like the rest of us.

It’s huge for the simple reason that the Church is fully aware of it and is not discouraging it in any way. It’s not something that is sponsored by the Church, but there is absolutely NO pushback or resistance, either. It’s being supported in a very real way – and that really is huge.

Plus Givens has apparently said he’s heading up a group currently writing a book on behalf of the church addressing a lot of the issues. I don’t know if it will carry ‘the logo’ or not. This was mentioned in a fireside so have no online reference for this rumour.
